Who will enter the Hall of Fame?

TV Week is tipped to announce the Logie Hall of Fame inductee tomorrow.

gold-logieTV Week is tipped to announce the Logie Hall of Fame inductee tomorrow.

A jury selected the winner from a shortlist submitted by networks earlier this year.

Of the 29 current inductees we have 3 shows (Play School, Four Corners, Neighbours), 1 female (Ruth Cracknell) and all the rest are male.

It will not be Peter Harvey, who died after the recipient was chosen. He will be acknowledged in the In Memoriam section.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this year’s nod goes to Home and Away.

The show is in its 25th year. It has received more Logies than any other TV show, and it dons 2 out of 3 covers for TV Week. Given it is still pulling strong numbers in a primetime slot it is, by any measure, a remarkable performance.

But I have also been banging on about the lack of females represented in the Hall of Fame for several years now.

Noni Hazlehurst would be a worthy inductee, not just for her years as a performer, but for her championing of children’s television behind the scenes.

I once asked Denise Drysdale, herself a veteran performer, which female she thought should be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Her answer was Hazel Phillips, who won Gold in 1967.

Jana Wendt should also be considered for breaking into the male-dominated bastion of investigative journalism. Kerri-Anne Kennerley is a TV survivor. Patricia Edgar also did much for children’s TV, as did the late Patricia Lovell.

But I am also reminded of writer Reg Watson, who created Prisoner, Neighbours, The Young Doctors, Glenview High, The Restless Years and Sons and Daughters.

What about the Working Dog team?

Daryl Somers is also conspicuously absent and that’s ridiculously wrong.

Pay TV is also absent from the list, but the event is sponsored by Freeview, so it won’t be this year.

  1. @Kuttsywood They can only be nominated the year after if they have passed on which I think is stupid…they still did the work.

1 Man 1 Woman and 1 TV Show makes sense to me! If there is nothing worthy then dont present it simple

  2. I’m not saying every year they have to induct a tv show. I am just saying there should be 3 awards under the one title.

Kerri-Anne Kennerly Denise Drysdale Ray Martin Tracey Grimshaw Jana Wendt Liz Hayes Ron WIlson George Negus Derryn Hinche Iain Hewitson John Burgess Steve Liebman

Home and Away The Today Show Totally Wild Sunrise (it changed breakfast television)

axed tv shows that were popular and still are Prisoner – All Saints – Blue Heelers

    Characters
Agro – Humphry – Alf Stewart – Harold Bishop

  3. I honestly think it’s time for the Hall of Fame to change. People are going to still be critical of nominations, if it is restricted to 1 inductee a year chosen by the industry. I’d go for a future model of four inductees a year: at a separate event, on the same weekend as the Logies (the old Friday night Logies slot perhaps), with two inductees chosen by the industry, and the remaining two chosen by the viewers , with the inductees also appearing at the Logies on the Sunday night.

As for my inductee choices: the late George Wallace Jr. (the original namesake for the Best New Talent Logies) and Denise Drysdale are my picks for future inductees.

  4. There are so many people worthy of being inducted, both male and female. I disagree with people suggesting that one show should be inducted per year, as they would run out of shows pretty quickly.

  5. I agree with David’s comments that Darryl Somers should be inducted into the hall of fame. Also I recon Jana Wendt should get a mention and not to forget to mention Tony Barber winner of a Gold Logie back in the early 80s.

  6. My vote would be for Jana Wendt. She had huge impact when she was on TV both on 60 minutes and A Current Affair (when it was a creditable program about current affairs). News news and Jana cemented Nine dominating the ratings and being “still the one” year after year. She was a tough interviewer but incredibly stylish. It’s a shame she is not still on our screens. A weekly interview show like Enough Rope would perfect for her….a format that is missed on Australian TV. The sad thing is Jana is way to intelligent for (the standard of) Australian TV in 2013.

  7. Imho, it should be one person (actor/actress/producer/creator/presenter etc) and one show per yeay. Otherwise you are chasing your tail by having an ever-expanding list of unrecognised talent.

  8. I think Denise Drysdale would be a worthy recipient. I don’t think any other female has managed to survive five decades on television… and best to give it to her now before she has to endure the shame of Celebrity Splash.

  9. With its remake this year it should be Prisoner or Reg Watson, creator of Australia’s most successful dramas. Compared to him John Edwards doesn’t stand a chance.

Though 25 years of Home & Away is also deserving because arguably, although it may never have reached quite the heights of Neighbours, it’s had more longstanding success and popularity here than Neighbours and is still going (relatively) strong to this day.

  10. Where are Maggie Dench, Toni Lamond, Lorae Desmond, Denise Drysdale, Lynn Bayonas, Maggie T, Jana Wendt, KAK, Noni Hazelhurst, Hazel Phillips, Anne Wills and Caroline Jones????? Will one of these make the list? Not bloody likely. I think Home and Away making it before another another woman is inducted would be a travesty!

  11. David, a great point. Two women should be inducted – not because it is worthy, but because it is right.

    1. Toni Lamond. The first woman anywhere in the world to host a TV tonight show. Toni broke this ceiling back in 1958 on IMT..

    2. Maggie Tabberer. She helped pioneer women on TV through the 1960s and 70s, beyond what was expected of woman at that time. In her 70s, she has still been bringing her style to the screen on Foxtel across the past decade. Oh, and she is a class act.

Let’s hope it is a seriously considered recipient who has truly made an outstanding contribution to the industry.

  12. scooter makes a great point, makes me consider Ted Robinson, John Eastway as well – Producers that have been prolific and accomplished, but then The Logies is a cult of personality – the last executive to get inducted was Chisholm, and they are few and far between. Andrew Denton, Kerrie O’Brien, Caroline Jones – would all be worthy too.

  13. I thought it was unfair that they didn’t give this honour to Home and Away when the show turned 20, just like Neighbours. I’m hoping they sense their mistake and reward them now for their 25th year.

  14. surely with the contribution to tv, both Free To Air & Pay TV, John Edwards should be due a nomination.
In the last few years, at one point, I think he had more than one first run dramas on a number of networks, both free to air and pay TV, all premiering in one week!
Look at this year’s Logies alone:
Howzat, tangle, offspring, puberty blues, beaconsfield.
Has nominations in both popular & outstanding awards in shows he had produced. A worthy choice don’t you think David?

  15. God forbid it should be a woman. This list is worse then the Australian of the Year roll call. Surely women are just on TV to look pretty and giggle at the male news anchor’s quips??? I actually hadn’t even seen this list. It’s a pretty poor show. Thanks for the banging on, much appreciated.
