Derryn Hinch facing contempt charge

Derryn Hinch is to be charged with contempt of court after blogging about the man facing trial for the murder of Jill Meagher.

2013-04-09_1106Seven’s Derryn Hinch is to be charged with contempt of court over comments he made on his website about the man facing trial for the murder of Jill Meagher, Adrian Bayley.

Bayley last week pleaded guilty to murdering and raping Meagher, an ABC employee who went missing last September.

Supreme Court Justice Geoffrey Nettle this morning said the comments published on Hinch’s humanheadline website on Monday appeared to be in direct contravention of the suppression orders he made on Friday relating to the Bayley case.

At the time of Bayley’s plea, Justice Nettle made a number of orders prohibiting publication of certain matters.

Hinch tweeted on Monday night – ‘Things starting to coagulate. Seems Supreme Court miffed about Friday Thoughts blog on humanheadline.com.au, not tweets’’.

Hinch did not appear in court this morning after tweeting ‘‘No appearance your honour’’.

“Justice Nettle orders I be charged with contempt of court over editorial on Jill Meagher case. Methinks I’ll be the media whipping boy”.

Hinch has previously undergone 5 months home detention after breaching suppression orders against the names of two sex offenders.
