Renewed: Glee

It may be struggling in Australia, but FOX has just renewed Glee for fifth and sixth seasons.

2013-04-20_2131It may be struggling in Australia, but FOX is so happy with Glee it has just been renewed for fifth and sixth seasons.

Part of the reason of its success is ratings, it is averaging 8.7 million total viewers, but also the income the show delivers from its music and merchandise.

As the Hollywood Reporter notes, more than 53 million Glee tracks have been downloaded and more than 13 million albums have been sold worldwide, including two platinum and give gold albums. The Glee cast also holds the record for the most singles to ever enter the Billboard Hot 100 chart with 203 tracks to date, surpassing the records previously held by Elvis Presley, the Beatles and James Brown.

FOX entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly said in a statement “Glee debuted as the first and only successful musical comedy series on television, and more than four years later, it continues to defy genres, break new ground and have a significant impact on popular culture.

“Week in and week out, Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, Ian Brennan, Dante DiLoreto and the entire Glee team deliver a series that not only delights and surprises fans, but also inspires them to talk about, share, debate and engage with the show — and I’m absolutely thrilled to have them on board for another two seasons.”

In this week’s episode on ELEVEN the show tackles a high school shooting, an episode which generated considerable media discussion in the US.

ELEVEN has moved it to 8:30pm Tuesday to show as an M rated episode.

  1. I still like this show!! It is rather happy and upbeat, which is a breath of fresh air from all the murder and crime procedurals on air at the moment. Too much violence on TV these days. As much as I enjoy shows like Dexter, Supernatural and True Blood, a show like Glee is fantastic for just having a break and enjoying something a bit lighter.

  2. I agree that rather than keep seeing new students, they should do a time jump and see the characters’s successes and failures. It is still a fun show though. But needs a revamp. The only characters I care about, whether I like them or not, are Rachel, Finn, Kurt, Blaine, Santana and Brittany…

  3. Glee would be great if rachel gets hit by a bus and dies. she is sooooooooooooooo annoying. and chris colfer… please dude enough with the cliche’s

  4. Glee’s night was Wednesday, that was where it was most popular. After its ratings dropped there Ten moved it to later in the week where its ratings halved. Moving back from Thursday to Wednesday boosts its numbers a bit but then it was crushed by MKR.

Glee is still a hit in the US and rated a 2.2/6 with 18-49s last week. And nearly as many 18-49s record it and it does good business on the internet TV sites too, as well as all the merchandising.

Here Glee became hugely popular during the first season but after two seasons viewers just got tired of it.

  5. I’m actually enjoying the new season. I think the fourth season is much better than the second and third ones were. It can still be a little heavy handed at times, but when it’s good it’s really good. A bit unsure how they can stretch it out for two more season though, I would have thought one more would be it.

  6. @Brad33 … I doubt foxtel is to blame as never had any issues with series linking .. Except perhaps for the uk House of Cards .. As it did not automatically connect to To Play the King but I digress.. It would be a ten issue with its coding I would think that would not transfer recording. And with the free to airs playing so many games with schedule no wonders there are going to be stuff ups

  7. Glee should’ve been left on Thursday nights where it began and should’ve been shown close to airtime in the US. Channel ten moved it around and delayed it too much that its lots viewers and is now on Tuesday night with so much competition.

  8. I’ve stuck with it, im so disappointed by this. With no end in sight, I’m tuning out after this season.

It’s crippled enough with original cast member departures, now Jane Lynch is probably out because of her broadway career, heather Morris is pregnant and Cory is in rehab. The show needs to be put down.

  9. a word of caution… because Foxtels series link facility sucks so badly, if you had it set before the day/ time change it will have probably cancelled the recording, as it did mine… lucky i read it here as i thought it had been yanked from the schedule, once again…
