Seven News moving to automation

2013-04-14_1702Seven News is the latest broadcaster to make the move to automation, with several crew being made redundant as a result.

Automation allows control room staff the ability to control cameras and is used by SKY News, SBS, ABC and US newsrooms.

A spokesperson told TV Tonight,”Seven News Melbourne is implementing the latest in television production technology in the control room and studio which is best practice in newsrooms around the world,” he said.

“As a result, three part-time and three full-time staff have been made redundant. These decisions are never made lightly and in addition to redundancy packages we have offered transitional guidance into their next job.”

Seven said it would not impact on content or journalism and that it had purchased better technology than the troubled equipment ABC had initially implemented.

The new system is expected to begin from July 1st, with an automation roll-out due for newsrooms in other cities.

  1. A floor managers job looks simple to a cost cutting mangement but the first thing the viewing public will see without an FM on the the floor is the presenter looking to the wrong camera. This seems the norm on the ABC these days

  2. Channel Sevens so called ‘greatest asset’ (the staff) to be replaced by robots?? This will at least improve the content of the end of year goof tapes for those that are left. Good luck Mitch and Jen.

  3. It’s been around for over a decade. I would have assumed that all the networks would have it by now.
The ABC had problems in the beginning with cameras charging off like rogue daleks.

  4. “allows control room staff the ability to control cameras”. You mean no cameramen? Sound like TEN News Sydney in the beginning, and NEN/Prime Tamworth in the mid-60s. Worked fine then, should work fine now. Hopefully may mean less graffiti. I fear not.Trying to watch pics from Boston on ABC24. Bottom 1/4 of screen plastered with unnecessary graffiti completely obscuring pictures of what had happened.
