Eurovision Semi Final One: qualifying nations

Mirror balls, wind machines, buff boys and a giant -Malmö turns on a music spectacle.

2013-05-17_2340Australia got to see the first Semi Final in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest last night.

Malmö in Sweden turned on a fabulous show hosted by Petra Mede (Sweden’s very own answer to Julia Zemiro?).

This year the show even included a clip from Australia, celebrating the 30th year we have watched the contest on SBS.

Here are the first 10 countries to qualify for the Final. They join Italy, UK, Spain, Germany, France and Sweden which automatically qualify.

Moldova

Lithuania

Ireland

Estonia

Belarus

Denmark

Russia

Belgium

Ukraine

The Netherlands

OUT:
Serbia
Cyprus
Montenegro
Croatia
Slovenia
Austria

Australians again voted via the SBS Eurovision site, although it has no impact on the outcome. The top rated country was Denmark with 32,578 points, followed by Montenegro with 22,562 points and Ireland in third place with 21,916 points.

Tonight Semi Final #2 airs at 7:30pm with the Final on Sunday night.

Avoid Spoilers! The Final in Malmö ends around 7am AEST on Sunday morning so the winner is likely to infiltrate news site, TV and radio, Twitter and social media.

TV Tonight will not be publishing any Final results or comments early, but winner results will be posted AEST with the end of the SBS broadcast.

  1. The Astronauts were the best! I’m disappointed they didn’t make it through. Ireland and Denmark were the next best, so I’m glad they did ok at least.

  2. Glad to see Belgium and Netherlands qualify. Western European countries haven’t had a great run recently with the eastern and Scandinavian blocs dominating.
That said, I do think Slovenia was hard done by, ‘straight into love’ was classic euro-pop!

  3. I have always wondered why they don’t do a global version of Eurovision (although I think there would be some naming problemsif they were to call it World-vision )

  4. Could you give us the numbers at some time for the 2 semi-finals please David?and Julia’s intro shows too if you could.Without rating wraps today and tomorrow,we’ll likely not know otherwise.Generally don’t ask you for extra ratings results..specially on weekends.I see my 2% favorite Russia advanced…thought Malmo put on a pretty good show..and as long as no bifurcated bodies show up on any bridges all should be good.
