House Husbands has its strongest episode so far this Sunday night, because it’s dealing with more meatier drama than its usual lighter fare.
Following the death of Nicola (Leah de Niese), an angry Justin (Firass Dirani) searches for answers. Dirani puts in a good performance as the grieving husband, although the silly staging of a scene with her ashes just about derails it all.
Meredith Penman also impresses in the role of the driver behind the fatal accident.
Justin is forced to face the cold hard reality that no-one is to blame for Nicola’s death and find a cathartic way to say goodbye. When Nicola’s funeral is hi-jacked by her family and does nothing but confuse and alienate his kids, an angry Justin throws himself into preparations for the School Disco. Unable to stop looking for someone to blame, he tracks down the driver of the car that hit Nicola, confronting the driver at work, leading to a scuffle and Justin’s near arrest.Â
8:30pm Sunday on Nine.

Based upon the promos, this episode looks embarrassing.Tracking down the driver is plain silly.
Remember, if it’s in the Big Book Of Screenwriting Cliches, then House Husbands will use it.
Judging purely on the promos, this storyline looks like its handled with the sensitivity and nuance of a sledgehammer.
Killing off a major character just to create some drama sounds like the show might be jumping the shark.
