So what’s the House Rules makeover like anyway?

How does the "Before / After" episode of House Rules stack up? Minor Spoilers.

2013-05-15_2159After so much disappointing press on House Rules (including here) I decided to do Seven a favour and fast-forward to a media preview of the all-important reveal episode.

We all love a “Before / After” reveal and in my view this is the episode Seven will be looking at to gain some traction.

I won’t give away Spoilers here but it’s still possible to give you a sense of what’s in store.

The episode begins with lots of last-minute panics as the couples frantically try to finish their rooms before the clock stops ticking.

Then the judges, Home Beautiful Editor Wendy Moore and architect Joe Snell, inspect the finished rooms.

I’m no renovation expert but the rooms look pretty impressive, especially for just one week’s work. Admittedly, I’ve seen some “wow” rooms on The Block, but they’ve had their share of “what the?” rooms too.

Watching the reactions of the owners of the house as they see the transformations is one of its better moments. So far, I’m not seeing a lot of Johanna Griggs on site during renovations. She is at Home Base for the scoring but I hope she’s not just going to phone in her contribution. Scott Cam at least gets his hands dirty on that other show, as well as doing the narration.

I’m also not sure what happens regarding the house exteriors….

That said, the reveal episode works for those “Before / After” moments so it would be the pick of the current eps.

This will air on Monday night, so it has to compete against The Voice live show. A big ask!

  1. I’m not surprised this is struggling. Watched the first couple and god, it’s slow – trying to milk very undramatic moments into something much bigger. Also doesn’t help that viewers don’t know anything about the first couple – the concept might work a bit better further down the line when the contestants are renovating the homes of people viewers are more familar with.

With renovation shows though nothing beats Grand Designs where you get real drama out of the real life changing moments during a real build.

  2. I am enjoying House Rules much more than The Block, I was laughing out loud quite a few times during last night’s ep.

I like the way the slightly understated narration tells you what’s going on without hitting you over the head – it makes the show come across more as an observational than reality show, which makes a nice change from all the stupid gimmicks and challenges and hoop-jumping on The Block.

I wish thios would do better ikn the ratings.

Oh, memo to Seven: if having a permanent on-screen graphic promoting this show for days prior to its launch still couldn’t push it past 800k, maybe you should give up on ever using that strategy? Just a thought.

  3. I’ll stop watching as soon as the Perth reveal is shown. Not really keen on the show and between this and The Block its too much and I can’t remember who anyone is.

  4. Well, night one of HR and I fell asleep, night two I sort of watched it while I read a book….not sure if I will bother with night three…might just watch the reveal show and leave it at that…..I thought the people on the block (any series) were pretty thick at times but the ones on HR are very thick !!

  5. I watch a bit of The Block, and so far this series some of the work has been so shabby as to be comical. The best was 1 guy using about 10 kilos of screws to hold his ceiling sheets up…and it’s still a mess.Wonder if they’re gonna try to stir up controversy by having the Victoria guys getting a bunch of help from close by friends and relatives.

  6. I tried House Rules, and i think it is better than this season of The Block (which is dismal so far), but its still nothing brilliant.

I notice it does the same thing that annoys me about MKR. In that it edits heavily from different bits and pieces all over the place, to basically
script out whatever conversations/confrontations/disasters that it wants to create.
The time lapses and inconsistences as a result of this, are not as noticeable during MKR because it’s basically just the two team members behind their bench the whole time.
But with HR it’s a whole entire house full of other couples and tradies etc, and it seems it’s harder for them to hide the extremely obvious edits.

I might zone in and out during reveal nights, but don’t think i’ll be able to handle much more than that.

And btw, this show has barely enough footage to fill an hour. It has no business running until 8:50. The first thing they need to do is finish it at 8:30.
