Upfronts 2013: ABC (US)

Video: New trailers from ABC (US) include Rebel Wilson's comedy and Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

ABC (US) launched its new Fall season to advertisers at the Lincoln Center in New York, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

“Every year we tell you we have a dozen great new shows that people are going to love, and you give us millions of dollars and we put them on and most of them suck, but here’s what’s crazy: Next year you’ll come back and do it again. Every year I wonder, what is wrong with these people? Someone needs to talk to them about their spending!” he joked.

“NBC is on a roll – oh wait, not a roll. What do you call it? A spiral. It’s important to remember when you cancel one Matthew Perry show, three more rise up to take its place. Things are looking up for NBC since they finally got rid of their worst shows, The Office and 30 Rock. They’re planning a 12-day long game show called The Million Second Quiz. The top prize is $10 million, which is pretty amazing. Not the prize, but the fact that NBC has $10 million.”

His full transcript is at Deadline.

Amongst the new shows are Once Upon a Time spin-off Once Upon a Time in Wonderland starring Australia’s Sophie Lowe and Rebel Wilson’s Super Fun Night.

There is Marvel series Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., drama series Betrayal, Lucky 7, and new comedies The Goldbergs, Trophy Wife and Back in the Game.

In a major coup Super Fun Night nabs the prime post-Modern Family position. Rebel Wilson appeared at the Upfronts and cheekily promised not to do “a Lena Dunham.”

  1. I am not a fan of Once Upon a Time but that trailer for Wonderland looks fantastic.

SHIELD also looks good. I agree with others that Betrayal looks like it will be axed within a few episodes

None of the new comedies on this network look very good IMO.Couldn’t get through more than a minute of the trailer for “The Goldbergs” and didn’t bother with Lucky 7 either

  2. I wasn’t a fan of Rebel until I saw her in Bridesmaids and Pitch Perfect.

I love her now, it’s s shame she is putting on a Super Fake American Accent in Super Fun Night.

  3. I must be in the minority. I think ABC has the best batch of all the networks. Super Fun Night, SHIELD, The Goldbergs, Wonderland, Trophy Wife all look great to me.
Considering Avengers is 3rd biggest film of all time, SHIELD should rate quite well, but it’s been put up against NCIS which is the biggest show in the US.

  4. Does anyone know which network is likely to get rights to “Agents of Shield”? Seven has the deal with ABC, Ten has it with CBS/Paramount. Any guesses on which one would apply.

  5. A lot of good ideas here but the question will be, will they transpire to ratings? Promos are one thing but the show is another. In saying this last seasons new shows were pretty average. This season is looking more promising.

Nine will be happy. They will get the Rebel Wilson comedy due to the Warners deal.

  6. S.H.I.E.L.D looks interesting, but the rest? Betrayal looks the worst to me. ABC when I checked had some interesting pilots, evidently none of those were picked up, sigh.

  7. After seeing the Super Fun Night trailer I feel kinda vindicated about my negative comments last week. But I do have to admit that it’s not as bad as Bogan Pride. Her sort of big whacky humour probably works best as a multi-cam sitcom (which is what the original pilot for Super Fun Night was – not sure why it got changed to single cam). Anyway, good luck to Rebel.

  8. They really got stuck into NBC, hey why not be positive guys and not lay into another network!

That said Jimmy is right every year we get sucked into all the new shows and then sometimes just weeks later are heart broken when ‘our’ show is canceled.

Right now I’m more into comedies and maybe a little sifi and not interested in the drama’s… from all the networks.

  9. Not a huge fan if Rebel, but good luck to her.
She certainly scored well with timeslot, you couldn’t ask for better than having modern family as a lead in
