Rafters ending, get the Kleenex ready…

Packed to the Rafters will end in a double episode on July 2nd -and fans will probably need the Kleenex at the ready.

2013-06-19_0051Packed to the Rafters will “end” in a double episode at 8:45pm Tuesday July 2nd -and fans will probably need the Kleenex at the ready.

The finale features new appearances from Hugh Sheridan, Jessica Marais, Jessica McNamee, James Stewart and Ryan Corr alongside the current regular cast.

The final two eps are written by Marieke Hardy and Margaret Wilson, respectively.

Without giving too much away, it’s the montage look-back that will have devotees reaching for the Kleenex.

Seven has indicated it plans to develop a new chapter for the family in the form of telemovies or another series after at least a year’s break.

  1. Long running, Successful and viewer devoted shows like this need a big ending. It’s all a bit vague as first we heard Erik Thomson state there was “..an ending of sorts” and Ms Gibney say same. Did they axe it and write the tie up scripts last year? Did they know that they should begin wrapping it all up? usually, it’s announced prior to a season that the show will not return. So far it all seems unexpected..or did 7 not want to deliver the news. I love finals…when they really do finalise and go out with a bang. It gives writers the free hand to do their best. I think of other shows with big endings. Northern Exposure, Roseanne…family ties etc…where we’re given a very decent farewell. I hope that “The Rafters” is suitably given the send off it deserves.

  2. Re eventually returning the show after a year or so hiatus, may I suggest that the following characters be killed off, never to return: Carbo, Loretta and Coby. Absolutely painful characters (and actors), the three of them.

  3. At least they are ending it on a reasonably high note. There were only so many silly Carbo storylines they could make before he officially jumped the shark.

  4. I can’t believe this great Australian drama is ending. I do believe though if it hadn’t been for most of the family leaving that it would still be going on.
I don’t understand why it’s ending at episode 12 though??
I swear I remember reading they were getting ready to film season seven when they were dismissive about the show ending. So I assumed 22 episodes had been filmed. =(

  5. The finale filmed last december.
Jessica Marais filmed with the rest of the cast as she was visiting Australia at that time with James stewart (Jake). who will also appear in it.

  6. Networks always have such vague plans for TVMs or future series. The show has been profitable and such announcements keep the fans happy.

But the key cast has to have not found other gigs, has to not have better replacement shows, the viewers have to still be very keen to watch it. Rarely does anything thing get made, and if it does it often gets only mediocre results and is cancelled for good.

  7. @The other adam
The house they use was for sale in November, so filming was probably done and dusted before that. but the fact that this was planned to be a 12 episode season when scripts were being ordered would be a sign that it was planned as the final season long ago.

  8. So, Seven are willing to broadcast a double-ep finale of their own show as it was intended to be seen, but fans of other drama series are not shown the same courtesy when double-ep finales are split over two weeks.

I suppose we should be thankful that at least Seven actually show season finales, *cough*Person of Interest*cough*.

  9. Did Jessica Marais actually film scenes with the rest of the cast in Australia, or is it like previous episodes where it is just a video-call type thing from the US?
