Regional WA switches off analog

Regional and Remote Western Australia made the permanent switch to digital television today.

Nullarbor PlainRegional and Remote Western Australia made the permanent switch to digital television today. It follows the Perth switch off in April.

“At 9am (WST) today analog TV signals right across regional and remote areas of Western Australia were switched off permanently,” Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, said.

“Western Australia has fully switched over to digital television, with the 184,700 households in regional and remote areas of Western Australia now joining the rest of the state.

“Today’s switchover means that there are now only four regions and six months left before Australia’s switchover to digital-only TV is complete.

“I would like to thank the people and organisations across regional and remote Western Australia, as well as in Perth, that have worked with local communities to help spread the word about the digital switchover.

“I would also like to thank the local broadcasters for their support and assistance in delivering their full range of digital TV services from 49 existing transmission sites throughout Regional and Remote Western Australia.

“These new commercial services, combined with the Government-funded Viewer Access Satellite Television service, mean that people in regional and remote Australia will be able to watch the same number of free-to-air channels as people in capital cities, many for the first time.”

Next to flick the switch is Darwin on July 30 followed by Sydney on December 3 then Melbourne and Remote and Central Eastern Australia on December 10.
