2.59m as Nine streaks to new Origin record

Ratings: Origin hits a new high as Nine scores a massive 44% network share.

2013-07-18_1009State of Origin scored massive numbers for Nine last night with 2.59m viewers watching the game in 4 cities.

It was the eighth straight win for the Maroons with a 12-10 victory over the Blues, capped off with a bloke streaking across the field.

It sets a new record for State of Origin since the introduction of OzTAM and is the second-biggest audience this year (My Kitchen Rules finale was 2.95m). The previous high was 2.51m for SoO game 1 last year.

There were 1.16m watching in Sydney alone with 865,000 in Brissy and 464,000 in Melbourne, 95,000 in Adelaide -and another 110,000 on GEM in Perth.

Added with regional viewers the numbers soar to 4.08m viewers -not counting viewers watching in pubs and clubs.

As a result Nine network pulled a mammoth 44.7% share last night, more than twice its nearest rival.

Trailing behind were Seven 20.5%, TEN 15.7%, ABC 14.0% and SBS 5.1%.

  1. What helped the SoO numbers was that it was a damn good game played at a frenetic pace. I’m not a league fan and I’m not from QLD/NSW but this was great TV that grabbed my attention.

Oh, and a small woot woot for Shaun.

  2. That should be 95,000 viewers in Adelaide, not Perth. Which is a great number for Adelaide. All those years of me ringing Nine to complain about not playing Origin live, and them telling me it doesn’t rate was complete BS.

  3. Last week was won by Nine by the biggest margin of any network this ratings year-8.3%.So far from Sunday on this week,Nine has posted wins of 11.0-7.9-7.4-24.2%.Friday and Saturday won’t see those margins, being Seven’s best days of the week, but with Ashes on again(last Thursday giving Nine a 19.8% win)I’d bet anything they win even more massively this week. These are heady times for Nine, and I’m thinking in the 5 years of archives on this blog, they’ve never had 2 weeks in a row like this.Just anecdotally David, can you recall this happening before?I don’t have a dog in this fight but find it’s pretty interesting to finally have a contest and it not just being a question of how much Seven wins by.By the way,did anything interesting happen on Today after Karl’s WWE style exit yesterday?

  4. That should be 95K in Adelaide for Origin… But a good result. Origin always has controversy, this year is no different. If it does move to a 3 game back-to-back series I can only see it improving in ratings.
