A Place to Call Home: July 7

Plotlines are conspiring on A Place to Call Home this weekend, with some great melodrama moments.

imagePlotlines are conspiring on A Place to Call Home this weekend, with some great melodrama moments if you’ve been watching this show.

This week on A Place to Call Home, newly discharged from hospital, Elizabeth is unimpressed by the proprietorial way Regina is behaving towards George and asks her to leave.

But when Regina sees George and Sarah engaged intimately at the cottage, she uses the information to force Elizabeth to allow her to stay at Ash Park to try to win the affection of George for herself.

Olivia is upset by the rising tension in the house caused by Elizabeth’s return. Unwilling to have her baby born in to such an environment, she tells James she wants to move away. James is resistant to the idea, but changes his mind after he has a sexually charged dream about Harry. For different reasons, the young couple agree that the best chance for their family now lies in the city.

Although Sarah is glad to see Jack back on the wagon, his awkward behaviour towards her makes her realise he has remembered his drunken declaration of love. Jack is embarrassed as Sarah gently and regretfully tells him that she’s in no position to return his affections. But he is deeply appreciative of her efforts in helping him recover and their friendship grows even stronger.

8:30pm Sunday on Seven.

  1. I agree its pure melodrama, but enjoyable viewing. I have been wondering about Hazelhurst’s character suffering her heart condition and whether it might have been included to give her an ‘out’ clause in her contract. Surely she can’t keep keeling over every time a nasty scandal reaches her ears.
I picked the gay storyline from about ten minutes into the premiere, and I also agree that the inter-ethnic/religious/class relationship with the daughter is dragging and often lame.

  2. I watched 30 mins of this show and found it campy (which I often don’t mind, if that’s what the intention is) and laughable. Noni doing her very best to play a clone of Maggie Smiths Dowager countess was painful to watch.
Maybe it’s just not my thing, but I don’t get the attraction or popularity of this one

  3. I do like this show but am I the only one who finds it a little unbelievable that Noni Hazlehurst could be Brett Climo’s mother? She’s no where near old enough, unless they were having children when they hit puberty back in those days.. again, not likely in society circles..

  4. I agree David. It’s a good old fashioned melodrama, which is something lacking from our screens at present & probably explains its success, especially with older Australians. Not to be taken too seriously but to be enjoyed.

  5. I think i would like this series more if Seven stopped calling it a drama series. It is pure unadultered well made high end soap that has flashes of “Sons and Daughters” and “Return to Eden”: in its style. It has even now introduced a wicked sister who looks like something out of “Snow White” or “Once Upon a Time”, complete with sneer and manner that would put Rowena Wallace to shame. I always hoped it wpuld be a true Australian drama series very high end in the ABC style, but it sure aint that. It makes “Home and Away”look like a dark and serious drama series.

  6. A very well crafted accurate portrayal of the times from one who was there then. They need to introduce a stolen-generation aboriginal housemaid, as rich people had in those days (like our solicitor neighbour).

  7. Im seriously loving this show.

Its interesting when they talk about war experiences and it was powerful last week with Jack and the japanese storyline.

Im interested to see what happens with Anna and her pregnancy story and Im hoping Olivia will at least start showing soon.

George and Sarah are meant to be together but of course its to perfect for them to be the happy couple without dramas.

  8. just so that it is on the record; i predict that olivia will give birth to a Maralinga Mutant. The way the nuclear tests were brought up up few episodes back seemed like it was not going to be relevant to that episode but will become part of a future storyline.

  9. I love this show, even though I have guessed many of the plot twists before they happened. It is traditional soap at its very best, as well as a fine glimpse of what Australia used to be.

  10. Gee, that Elizabeth, it was her idea for Regina to come in the first place. Pity she didn’t die from her heart attack, then maybe they could all live their own lives. Can’t wait to see her face when she realises Anna is pregnant to Gino. She’ll have another heart attack.
