Airdate: 2013 EJ Whitten Legends Game

Nine screens the AFL charity event, with Strauchnie, John Steffensen, Dermott Brereton, Rob Mills and more.

2013-07-03_1121Next week Nine (Melbourne) will  screen the AFL charity event, the 2013 EJ Whitten Legends Game with Doug Hawkins as Victorian coach, assisted by Andrew Bews and -yes- Bryan Strauchan (Strauchanie).

Also playing will be John Steffensen, Dermott Brereton, Rob Mills, Big Brother housemate Ryan Buckingham. The Block’s Keith the Foreman will lend a hand as a runner.

Hawkins hopes skipper Damian Monkhurst, along with Matthew Lloyd, goal-kicking superstar Brendan Fevola, former St Kilda player Steven Baker and Australian boxer Will Tomlinson, can put a stop to an All-Stars’ comeback in 2013.

Terry Daniher will again coach the All-Stars and Ben and Nick Holland will return to the field, along with Wallabies great Stirling Mortlock who will cross codes to line up alongside Tarkyn Lockyer, Russell Robertson, Peter Matera and former Bulldog Mitch Hahn.

Making their EJ Whitten debut for the All-Stars will be Shaun McManus, Nathan Eagleton and Mark McVeigh. The Vics will welcome former players Lindsay Gilbee, Corey Jones, Adam McPhee and David Wirrpanda.

This special annual event on the AFL calendar is set to be another ripper when Victoria take on the All-Stars for a great cause. Now in its 18th year, the EJ Whitten Legends Game has raised more than $1.1 million for prostate cancer research.

Geelong singer Michael Stangel, who proved his talent on The Voice in Team Joel, will take centre stage to sing the national anthem.

Garry Lyon, James Brayshaw and Craig Hutchison will call the game from the commentary box. As runners for the teams, Billy Brownless and Nathan Brown will bring viewers up close to the action with on-field interviews, with Tony Jones covering the game from the boundary line.

Wednesday, July 10, at 8.00pm on Channel Nine (please check local guides).

  1. For anyone living in NSW, QLD, the ACT who want to see this game or viewers in SA, WA, and NT who don`t want to watch this game on delay, Channel Nine will be streaming tonight`s match on the Jump-In app and on the Ninemsn Wide World of Sports website.

  2. I’m sure I read in todays Herald-Sun that Sam Newman has replaced Doug Hawkins as coach, obviously with Doug concentrating on his new career as a stand-up comedian for Clive Palmer.

  3. I’ve always thought that just for one day a year, surely to add to the nostalgia (although a lot of players are now of the more modern era) that Peter Landy should get a calling gig in some form at the game. He does a reasonable job freelancing at Comm Games, etc. And, it is kick and giggle after all for a great cause.
