“Mr Movies” Bill Collins will receive the inaugural ASTRA Lifetime Achievement Award at the 11th annual ASTRA Awards in Sydney tonight.
Collins, who already has an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for services to film and television and a Logies Hall of Fame award, is celebrating 50 years of television in 2013 hosting Bill Collins’ Golden Years of Hollywood every Saturday on FOX Classics.
“Bill Collins has introduced generations of Australians to the greatest films ever made, so we could think of no better tribute than to award him the inaugural ASTRA Lifetime Achievement Award,” ASTRA CEO, Andrew Maiden, said today.
“I am very excited and honoured by this special recognition of my work in television,” Collins said. “I love what I do. I love movies and I love teaching and for 50 years I have been able to teach in my own way on television about the art of great movies.”
Beginning his career as a teacher and later a college lecturer, Collins moved into television in 1963 as a presenter / producer of film appreciation segments on ABC-TV’s Roundabout.
He worked at each of the three commercial free to air networks before joining Foxtel in 1995, the year it launched.
Collins will attend tonight with his wife, Joan, at the event hosted by Deborah Hutton.

What an icon!
Great news, if it weren’t for Bill i might never have discovered Alfred Hitchcock films or come to love them as much as i do, as he was so informative giving background info to each movie when presenting on channel ten 20+ years ago.
I dare say there maybe a whole younger generation who now have a love of classic movies because of Bill, when i say younger i mean we were not even born when they were made, now we’re old too lol
Well done Bill, cant believe how young he still looks
Amazing his knowledge…even when I use to watch him of FTA many years ago…Well deserved.

Well deserved. Do we know how old he is? He must be close to 80. I remember watching his film reviews in school in the mid 1970s!
Well deserved. Congrats to Mr Movies.
The only thing I miss (since giving Foxtel the flick ) is Bill’s Saturday night intros to his movies on Fox Classics. The man is a legend. So much enthusiasm, so much knowledge.
