The Fairies creator declared bankrupt

The Supreme Court has ordered the winding up of The Fairies' retail, television, online and touring arms.

2013-07-21_0205Sad news today for The Fairies creator Jenifer Watts has been declared bankrupt after creating the brand in 1996.

Ms Watts has told the Sunday Mail that the Commonwealth Bank has sold her Adelaide home and taken mortgagee possession of her family home at Victor Harbor.

The Supreme Court this week also ordered the winding up of The Fairies‘ retail, television, online and touring arms because of a failure to pay debts of $378,952.

“I’ve lost everything,” Ms Watts said. “It’s been really sad and really hard.”

She indicated trouble began when US investors “reneged” on a deal to make a TV series for the US and Hispanic market.

The Fairies has screened in the UK, US, New Zealand, Malaysia, Bahrain, Qatar, Iraq and Oman and was also picked up by Qantas and Virgin airlines.

The Fairies brand has now been taken over by new investors.

  1. The Fairies has been very successful as a TV brand. It is a popular show with lots of DVD sales, international rights sold and merchandise. Many programs in TV land are aimed at a specific gender, whether adults or children’s shows, the fact that this show is aimed at girls is not detrimental, Dora the Explorer is one of the biggest children’s shows ever and is targetted at girls (Diego was spun off for boys after the success of Dora). It’s a real shame for Jenifer Watts, awful to lose everything you’ve worked hard for.

  2. Exactly benjimon. Also in kids shows you have to engage both boys & girls to be truly successful. My sons would not go anywhere near The Fairies as it was for (screw faces up) girls. Ewwww.
