Next Time Lord set to be revealed for Doctor Who

Update: Matt Smith's replacement in Doctor Who is set to be revealed in a BBC special airing Live on ABC1.

2013-08-02_1015Matt Smith’s replacement in Doctor Who is set to be revealed in a live BBC special on Sunday night (UK time) -early Monday morning Australian time.

Host Zoe Ball will unveil the 12th Doctor in their first-ever Who interview in front of a live studio audience. The half-hour show will include live special guests, Doctors old and new, as well as companions and celebrity fans.

Current Doctor Matt Smith and executive producer Steven Moffat will also give interviews.

Steven Moffat says: “The decision is made and the time has come to reveal who’s taking over the TARDIS. For the last of the Time Lords, the clock is striking twelve.”

Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One, says: “BBC One is the home of big live events and this special live show is the perfect way to reveal the identity of the next Doctor and share it with the nation. The Doctor is a truly iconic role and I’m more than excited about the booking.”

Ben Stephenson, Controller of BBC Drama Commissioning says: ‘We can’t wait to unveil the next Doctor with everyone live on BBC One on Sunday night. Amongst all the speculation and betting, there has been lots of fun and intrigue at work as we’ve been using the codename Houdini as a decoy! It’s the biggest secret in showbiz, even those working with the new Doctor on other projects at the moment have no idea they are in the presence of the 12th incarnation.”

  1. Managing Director of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Mark Scott has announced this on his Twitter Feed (@abcmarkscott):

Attention #Whovians. Live Monday 4am on #abc1, through the day on #iview, replayed Mon night on #abc2 – the announcement of the new Doctor.

  2. @Riga Matt Smith was revealed months before his debut in an actual episode. This may be the first time in a special live tv event though…

  3. I don’t believe the ABC broadcast the DW Confidential that introduced Matt Smith, so I don’t think we’ll see it here. It’ll certainly be on all the Australian news websites though.

  4. A ‘live BBC special’?? Ridiculous! The new incarnation of the Doctor should be revealed nowhere else but in an episode of Dr Who! My preferences; Ross Noble, Simon Pegg, Neil Morrissey, Lee Mack, Alan Davies, Rick Mayall, with Lee Evans as an outside chance!

  5. I like the idea of the ABC playing it. Although would this site be dangerous before it aired?

    @ deedeedragons

I know Matt Smith was under thirty. But Eccleston and Tennant wasn’t even if under a different producer/writer.

    @ Craig

I know they did a special of some kind for Matt Smith.

  6. It will be good if ABC can show it Monday, even if the news if leaked (as it will be) early Monday morning.

This is the right move by the BBC, can’t remember what they did last time with Matt or with David but you know the moment they start filming on location for the next season it’s going to be reveled so why not?

  7. If the ABC don’t do some sort of simulcast it’ll be on the internet and such within 5 seconds. No point running it later that day…
The 12th Doctor will no doubt be a white middle/young(ish) male. Just like it has been since Tom Baker’s days…

  8. Oooh!! If ABC manage to simulcast it as well, I’ll definitely be waking up early!
David, when do you think ABC will announce their plans???
