Nine matches Seven’s afternoon news

arvNine yesterday switched up its afternoon schedule to prevent Seven from having afternoon news unto itself.

Seven News at 4 with Melissa Doyle and Matt White ran from 4pm to 5:30pm but Nine began its 4:30 bulletin half an hour earlier, even following Nine News Now from 3-4pm.

Previously scheduled US entertainment show Extra was bumped to GEM to make room.

Added together with their 7pm GEM bulletin, Nine screened 4 hours of news and current affairs while Seven had 3 hours.

What will they do on a busy news day?

  1. I don’t bother with 7 or 9 news anymore. I have ABC24 streaming as “background music” on my PC most of the day. Turn it up if something catches my attention, then watch Lateline at the end of the day.
How long before one of them says “I’ll see your 4pm and raise you a 3:30”?

  2. Why must nine copy seven When it comes to news . Nine seems to always be playing catch up with seven.Prefer melissa doyle anytime. But seriuosly too much news now ,these days we have abcnews24.prefer light entertainment in the afternoons.something like the midday show with ray martin any one remember that show, only with KAK.

  3. @Jonno – agreed. If I need news fast I will resort to my iPhone or iPad. Or if I’m at work the Internet in general.

If I want to watch news I’ll tune into ABC24.

When I was growing up you had Agro, Come On Kids & a range if kids TV shows. It has diminished significantly in recent years. Don’t these stations have an obligation to show children’s television or does ABC2 & 3 cover all content?

Sometimes it’s nice to turn on the box if I leave work early & not have news. Often the afternoon news is so depressing or full of middle of the road American celebrities & their problems to fill the new hour (or should I say 90 minutes?). Let 7 & 9 battle it out…I won’t be tuning in. Perhaps I could watch something I taped earlier if I get home during this time slot 🙂

  4. Why have Nine and Seven extended your news bulletins from 60 to 90 minutes?

Even for Nine, who have a bulletin at 3pm, its 2 and a half straight hours of news and thats too much!! Put Extra at 4pm again, it’s not like it wasn’t working.

Seven should strip Seven Afternoon News back to 1 hour and bring it back to 4:30 and put The Daily Edition at 3:30 and run it for an hour. It’s not that bad a show, and its definitely cashing in on Sally Obermender’s newly found fame after her battle with cancer; even though they could of picked a better male and Australian co host (Seriously Seven, you think Kris Smith was the best option?)

  5. I think the maybe Nine News Now needs to move forward 30 mins to allow for Extra back in the schedule. I thought they were on the usual cross to the newsroom but is was actually the start of the news.
Too much news back to back. You need a little light entertainment in the afternoon.
Sure it feels the same on Seven also.

  6. “What will they do on a busy news day?”

I’m more concerned about what they will do on a low news day. Chatty repartee gets boring after 30 minutes.

  7. Thanks David, I didn’t think to check GEM. I taped the late night one. I was wondering what the hell was going on yesterday when Nine News Now seemed to be going way over.
