Seven says it’s “business as usual” and there is nothing to read into reports that a number of staff on Today Tonight have not had their contracts renewed.
Encore claims multiple sources inside the current affairs show have questioned the network’s long-term commitment to the show amid more rumours of a one-hour extended news on the eastern seaboard and recent press on Helen Kapalos.
“Morale is low, in part, because they’re playing games over contracts,” said one Seven insider. “People are tipping it’s because they want to make the jump to a one hour show.”
Seven has maintained the matter is all part of the cycle of contract negotiations.
But the show has slipped since the start of the year falling 9% compared to the same time last year. A Current Affair has already claimed the year in Sydney and Melbourne and is winning in Brisbane. The locally-produced versions of Today Tonight in Adelaide and Perth have already won in those cities which are doing their best to help national figures.
So far this week TT has won 2 of 3 nights.
Seven’s revamp is expected to be part of a wider network change involving a 4:30 bulletin, a new 7TWO programme for Melissa Doyle and addressing the weak lead-in from Deal or No Deal.
Holidays notwithstanding, Doyle has been getting on with the job of Sunrise, stepping in to host Sunday Night and reporting on the royal baby birth from London.

David… I did not post a link in my original comment. I am not sure what K Watson thinks he/she saw. If K Watson want’s to elaborate on what I am supposed to have done I would like to hear it.
Otherwise…Debate. Over.
But, there was a link on DaveM comment.
Own up Mr Knox.
Not on this story there wasn’t? In fact I had to go and search for Helen’s Twitter account through Google to check. Maybe DaveM can confirm? I’m not sure what we’re really debating anyway?
All i know is that Helen Kapalos is hot. she looks great in that photo. I am not surprised at this rumour. Seven has been restructuring its news department to make savings because of the slide in revenue.
Seven seems to be going down the road Ten did a few years ago. News news news. Look how that turned out.
Seven is still bleating that it is No 1 News. (Just saw an ad about 5 mins ago) They are no longer No 1 in Brisbane. They should stop the ads.
What crappy game show will Seven give us at 5.30? I think that they should move Home and Away to 5.30.
David…
Not sure what link K Watson is talking about…Maybe I’m a bit thick…
Cool? 🙂
@ K Watson….
I have absolultely no idea what you’re talking about. I wonder if Mr Knox does… But if you liked it (whatever it was ???) good for you.
Anyway, moving on…
There was no link so no issue. I wish more people would respect a simple request for no links.
Naughty naughty DaveM, Mr Knox almost caught you out on a link. Shame. But I saw it. Loved it. Thanks DaveM.
I’ll dance my happy dance if both DOND and TT bite the dust.
And who are we going to believe? Seven or its staff? Stay tuned for the answer, probably around the end of November I’d reckon.
Hmm, Any chance Helen could return to Ten when Mal finishes up later this year…. Perhaps Seven could ditch Peter Mitchell, and give Helen the 6pm News….
Hmm…not sure if this is related but Helen’s twitter account has disappeared. “User does not exist”…Maybe it’s just a glitch. Whatever it is, it just gets worse for her…
pretty sure deal or no deal is being scrapped.
