Sharon first evicted from Big Brother

The eldest has been evicted from the Big Brother house, as 41 year old mother of three Sharon was the first to go.

2013-08-13_0008The eldest has been evicted from the Big Brother house, as 41 year old mother of three Sharon was the first to go from the 2013 series.

She was eliminated with only 4% to save her while Tim, Jade, Drew, Heidi and Jasmin all survived the first eviction.

This year Big Brother has strategically returned to a “Vote to Save” rather than a “Vote to Evict” which is a move designed to see lacklustre and under-the-radar housemates evicted rather than those who may polarise viewers for providing much-needed conflict.

Housemates voted for Sharon for supposedly holding back and not “fully embracing” the Big Brother experience.

“I have a soft spot for Ben, but Jasmin was my rock in the House, she reminds me a lot of myself at her age,” Sharon told host Sonia Kruger.

Sharon was reunited with her family last night on stage, but the eldest being evicted first is not an encouraging sign after calls to diversify the cast.

  1. Agree with the lack of diversity comments, decided not to watch this show this year & probably won’t again unless they really do diversify. Although 2008 season they did with age groups & backgrounds a bit more, but they were mostly bogans or dummies!

The other issue to me is it seemed quite ‘sanitized’ last year, no one seemed to actually talk about themselves & their emotions, or any interesting topics, or they probably did & it was edited out by 9. It mostly seemed to be mindless chit chat or bitchiness. It was like 9 wanted to play it too safe for fear of it not being family friendly viewing which made it boring.

  2. I have scanned the comments and it confirms to me that it isn’t Reality TV but a producers view of the most interesting things they want to show the audience.
This is why ‘back stories’ are important in talent shows and contestants claim they were misrepresented in cooking, travel, renovation shows, because scenes are edited, so we can see recaps of footage already seen and hence the original material needs to be short, sharp and engaging to ‘hook’ viewers!

  3. The viewing audience Voted to Save rather than evict last year as well, so it is less of a “strategic return” and more of a continuation of the new series format.

  4. They concept of the show is to put young extroverts on display for other young people to watch. You can put whomever you want into the house but it is a popularity contest a most of the voters will be young.

  5. There goes the one non-GenY.
As for diversity – It’s not just about skin colour. I think the multiculturalism is really superficial. It’s great to see non-whites, but I would love to see more indigenous representation and some first generation migrants on the TV. From what I can tell, all of these people were raised here.

I remember a UKBB where it had a homophobe, a political activist lesbian, a refugee, a couple of gay guys, a person who didn’t like refugees and a transsexual (the eventual winner) as part of the 13 housemates.

    That’s diversity.

I’d like to see BB actively seek out a more diverse set of housemates. Just because thousands of GenY pretty girls try out, doesn’t mean they need to fill the house. Maybe if people start seeing themselves represented, there’ll be an increase in the diversity of applications.

  6. To go forward in BB you need to be loud (i.e Heidi) or zany (i.e Tim). Sharon received the least screen time because imo she didn’t do anything. She’s not there to hook up so there goes that angle.Being labelled the ‘Mum’ of the house is the kiss of death.

  7. @ bettestreep2008 – thanks I totally blanked! So that is 4 out of 16 (25%) housemates that is not Caucasian – definitely the diversity that BB was promising to offer. Now to just improve age variations and it’ll be set (in terms of housemates anyway).

  8. Joss777 – you forgot Mykala who is Asian.

One of the ‘non-caucasian’ housemates will go next and we will eventually be left with an all white house… yet again.

Don’t blame the producers really. It’s what Australian viewers want.

  9. If BB stopped showing us the same clips over and over again, to jog our memory of what just happened before the ad break ?!, maybe we could see some more original footage and give more housemates time to shine.

  10. I just hate how this year was meant to have more diversity yet in regards to age there was only one housemate to exceeded last years contestants. However, the inclusion of 3 ethnic contestants (Jaz – African-American, Tahan – Aboriginal, & Rohan – Indian) and an increase of 1 to 2 homosexual contestants (Ben & Tully) is great, but age is still a big problem that needs fixing. Hopefully an intruder is in their 40’s or older (maybe another Karen/Krystal or at the very least a mum that is connectable and will get on-screen time)

  11. Sharon left because we hardly saw her so how could we connect with her?
Rohan or Jasmine will probably go next.
If I were Sharon I would feel really annoyed at how little air time I had, its not really fair.
I would only vote if it were to evict because if you wanted to save say three or four people it would cost more in phone calls so its not worth it.

  12. Sharon received the least screen time in the nightly ‘soap’ that is BB. The storylines revolve around the intrigue and gossip. The package of her time in the house showed a fun and expresive character, but the audience did not see it. Hence bye bye Sharon. Likewise Jasmin who was the next in line for the chop. Producers only have themselves to blame.
