Harry Connick Jr. to join American Idol

Harry Connick Jr. is set to become the third judge on a revamped American Idol, joining Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez.

2013-08-31_1844Harry Connick Jr. is set to become the third judge on a revamped American Idol judging panel, joining Keith Urban and a returning Jennifer Lopez.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals he “is inking a deal” for the 13th season which will endeavour to distance itself from last season’s friction between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj.

The jazz singer was previously a guest mentor of Australian Idol on TEN.

Rumoured potential judge Dr. Luke dropped out of negotiations due to a conflict with his Sony Music label, at odds with Idol’s deal with Universal Music Group.

Former judge Randy Jackson is set to become a mentor on the show.

Following disappointing Idol ratings this year, it isn’t yet clear if TEN will resume an Aussie broadcast, potentially on ELEVEN.

  1. Think Harry & Keith are great but Jennifer no. She is like Mariah in that it is all about her. Hopefiully Keith & harry can keep her grounded.
It will be interesting to see how much influence Randy has. I assume they have got rid of Jimmy Iovine & replaced him with Randy.
I really hope that Eleven will show it again preferably live with a later replay.
    Over to you Ten/Eleven.

  2. @Sophie – I think Jimmy is out completely as in not being a judge or mentor… which is great cos I always fast forward his stuff cos I never agree with him lol.

  3. He was very annoying as a guest mentor last season, not letting contestants stray from original arrangements of classic songs. Which is kind of the opposite of what these shows encourage.

But, at least Jennifer is back so I’ll be watching for her and Keith.

  4. I dearly hop YRN will shift Idol to ELEVEN. A morer natural fit.

Harry was pretty tough on the contestants when he guest mentored and guest judged last season. He’s certainly not a fan of excessive licks and runs. I think he’ll be a good edition to the judging panel.

Will.i.am, who was also rumoured to be joining the line up has resigned with The Voice UK, so hopefully that counts him out.

If Randy is taking Jimmy Iovine’s mentoring spot, does that mean Jimmy will be a judge?
