Shh… “Summer Hill” is really Wentworth

When Wentworth was greenlit by Foxtel it was given a special codeword to stop news leaking out to Prisoner fans.

2013-05-21_1327An interesting aside to the development of Wentworth was recently revealed by Penny Win, Foxtel’s Commissioning Editor of Drama.

Given the fandom for Prisoner, it seems that when the show was greenlit by Foxtel it was given a special codeword to stop news leaking out before they were ready.

“When we were going into this we knew that it had an amazing legacy in Australia,” she said.

“We were being really, really careful because we had such an amount of respect for the original.

“We all know that the television industry is littered with reimaginings and remakes that haven’t worked. So we had to do it with the greatest amount of respect and we had a secret code-name for it.

“It was called Summer Hill,” she admits.

With die-hard international fans any word about a Prisoner remake might have been misunderstood until Wentworth was ready to reveal its new take on the original.

“We knew it would create a whole storm which we didn’t want to acknowledge until we had created it.”

The FremantleMedia drama begins filming its second season later this month.
