NBC has decided to remake Murder, She Wrote this time with actress Octavia Spencer (The Help) in the Angela Lansbury role.
The new version is described by Deadline as a “light, contemporary procedural in the vein of Bones or Fargo, it follows a hospital administrator and amateur sleuth (Spencer) who self-publishes her first mystery novel … [and her] avid fascination with true crime leads her to become an active participant in the investigations.”
Spencer said, “I’ve always considered myself an armchair detective and in a recent meeting with (NBC exec) Bob Greenblatt, he asked me what type of character would be able to lure me to TV. Naturally, I said ” J.B. Fletcher” meets Colombo …And here we are.”.
The pilot is written by Desperate Housewives writer Alexandra Cunningham.
But filling the shows of the inimitable Ms. Lansbury will be no mean feat (or feet?). Besides we already have Castle which is pretty much the same premise with a male lead.
NBC recently tried reviving Ironside, but it was cancelled after only a few episodes.

If they don’t have writers that can come up with something new other than remaking classics or Americanising UK shows then they need to fire all the writers and get someone with talent and imagination! And fire the Execs who agree to them!
This remake is a failure even before it starts, a totally stupid idea.
They also tried to remake Ironside? OMG! Nothing could come close to the original of that or to Murder She Wrote!
I don’t like remakes (or reboots as they’re now calling them)!
Reading that article, the premise would be a good show on it’s own, with a new title & new characters.
So, why on earth do they keep wanting to remake & change the original show to within an inch of what it was?
It makes no sense at all!
Huh? So the network that cancelled Harry’s Law because it was skewing way too “older” than they wanted have greenlighted a show that back in the days was such a hit with young people. I say again: Huh?
Lets remake The Beverly Hillbillies.
They already did. It was a feature film.
Noooooo. Noooooooo. Noooooooooo!!!!!!!
Every time I’ve heard of an old remake, I’ve thought “ha – they should remake Murder She Wrote too” … as a joke. This is just sad though.
Seems I’m not the only one who has thought that too 🙂

If this trend continues, it will be only a matter of time before America does a remake of “The X-Files”.
For crying out loud. Stop with the remakes America. Also news this morning that Charmed will be rebooted. Stop it already. Go find some of your own ideas
Did they not learn after trying to remake Ironside ?
Anyway,Jessica Fletcher was an old woman. That actress doesn’t even look half her age.
Why remake it? Why not just create a completely new show with a similar theme?
This is a terrible idea. I shudder to think how this will turn out given the horrendous attempt at remaking Ironside.
