benaudLegendary cricket broadcaster Richie Benaud is in a stable condition in Sydney’s Prince of Wales Hospital following a car accident yesterday.

Benaud, who turned 83 earlier this month, was driving home alone to Coogee mid-morning yesterday when his car mounted a nature strip and hit a brick wall.

He suffered chest and shoulder injuries and is expected to be hospitalised for a number of days.

A Nine statement indicates police attended and there were no charges.

Despite being in some discomfort, he remains in good humour.

“No one else was injured, and I was more worried about the car than myself,” said Richie.

“Richie’s remarkable,” said wife Daphne. “At first I was quite concerned but today he’s looking unbelievably well.”

Nine Entertainment CEO, David Gyngell, added: “Richie is a national treasure. In the Nine family, he sits at the head of the table. As always he and Daphne have our support and Richie will return to call the coming Ashes series against England – his 36th summer in Nine’s Wide World of Sports commentary box – when he is good and ready.”
