TEN signs Paula Abdul to So You Think You Can Dance

TEN snares Paula Abdul as judge and Carrie Bickmore as host of its new Dance series.

2013-10-19_2323TEN has snared Paula Abdul as a judge on its rebooted So You Think You Can Dance, to air in 2014.

The former American Idol judge will be one of four judges on the show, to be hosted by Carrie Bickmore for TEN.

The Sunday Telegraph reports the other three positions go to choreographers Jason Gilkison and Shannon Holtzapffel plus Aaron Cash from Tap Dogs.

Carrie Bickmore was on track to study ballet at the WA Academy of Performing Arts before a career in journalism.

“I have loved dancing since I was a little girl. I remember when I first watched the show years ago that it was a production I would have love to be involved with. It’s fun, high energy and you can’t help but be awe-struck by the talent of the dancers,” she told News Corp.

“It will be great to have someone so bold and dynamic on the show like Paula. And as for the boys, I’m used to taming them (on The Project).”

Abdul’s post-Idol career include the short-lived Live To Dance (hosted by Andrew Gunsberg) and The X Factor US. She has previously been a guest judge on the US series.

TEN is reviving the series, produced by Shine Australia, after a 4 year absence.

  1. i am not sure about this show being on TEN. Nine or 7 should have picked it up. It will most likely tank on TEN. Carrie Bickmore being the host looks like a direct copying of having a blonde female as host ie Cat Dealy in the US. I do hope this works for the Network’s sake but it most likely will not. Paula Abdul probably will not last beyond that season.

  2. Yes Yes Yes.

If i can convince the Man I will be watching! – everybody dance now was a Crappy format, But everyones on a winner with this proven show.

  3. This is good news from ten. I’m glad to see they are going all out for the revamp of this show. Paula is pretty dam good at what she has done in the past and will be great for sytycd. Ten really need to put everything behind this show, a really big promotion but they need some pro’s to develop something amazing, no crap ones like the girls vs boys crap on Mc. Carrie will be great for this show I rekon too, hot, knows how to dance and I always wanted to see her outside the project.

  4. Ten, do you really think Carrie Bickmore, even though she is brilliant as a panelist on the Project is the best choice to host a reboot of SYTYCD? It in my opinion just doesn’t fit her, but it might, she’s very likeable and has been nominated for Gold Logies for a reason. She might be impressive.

Paula Abdul, again… do we haveto import a judge? At least 2 or 3 could be Aussies. But it is an improvement from Everybody Dance Now when both of the team mentors were imports, when in my opinion, Timomatic could have been perfect for the show and could of saved it from falling into a heap!

  5. Now i understand why Paula was used so much on the US. Great choice.
Jason should have been kept as a choreographer because the show will need to have good choreography. That is what sets the US version apart.
Carrie Bickmore? Please don’t let it be like
Sarah Murdoch. Just because someone loves dance doesn’t make them a great host of a dance show.
Now we wait to see what night Ten will program it on.
In the UK X Factor & Strictly Come Dancing go head to head on Sat night. Imagine if the networks here promoted Sat night to an event night.

  6. Its great to see Paula on the show. Its also great to see Carrie hosting it. Both will bring a fun and positive approach to the show. I think Ten should use it as a replacement for American Idol and air it from Australia day to before Good Friday to prevent any clashing with The Voice and My Kitchen Rules.

  7. I found her critique’s while guest judging on the US SYTYCD to be rather general and quite frankly boring. I’m also not a fan of a four piece judging panel, it gets too long winded and drawn out (with mostly similar comments all round)

Will watch it anyway and I think Carrie is a likeable host for the job (can’t compare to the fantastic Cat Deeley though)

  8. I have no problem with Carrie Bickmore, but will TEN ever bring in new talent rather than recycling through hosts and guests of Roving Enterprises shows?

  9. Good move. Paula is a lightning rod for publicity and wacky behaviour – yet she also has dance credibility – so I think she’s a great fit.

Carrie as host is also good. Ten need to build their talent stable and cross pollinate.

But the million dollar question is: will they stuff it all up with bad programming? Sadly, after their Sunday night launch of The Bachelor, you have to wonder.
