The Feed: Oct 17

Meet breast cancer patient Cass Boyle who has endured a mastectomy, chemotherapy and a breast reconstruction -and now gets nipple tattoos.

Cass BoyleTonight on SBS 2 The Feed tells the story of 37 year old Cass Boyle who finds closure in her three year battle with breast cancer. She has endured a mastectomy, chemotherapy and a breast reconstruction.

Now presenter Andy Park reports on the final step in her journey; nipple tattoos.

Overlooking “Fire Red” and “Flamingo Pink”, Cass tells The Feed how she chose the pigment she thought would match the colour of the nipples she lost. Cass has settled on one skin tone in particular. It’s called “Girl’s Night Out”.

In this moving feature story, Cass opens up to Andy on what this procedure means to her and how these colourful tattoos will restore the parts of her that cancer took away, and make her feel whole again.

Cass explains that her decision to get a breast reconstruction was about getting back something that stood for a lot more than just a breast.

“I just wanted to look exactly how I used to look. I quite liked how I used to look. I quite enjoyed my physicality. In fact I will probably say that it was my favourite part of me before this happened and I just wanted them to resemble what they used to be,” says Cass.

Cass was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2010 after she discovered a growth south of her collar bone. The timing was heartbreaking as her same sex partner Kell was seven months pregnant with their first child.

“You can’t ever forget that feeling of I’m going to die. I’m going to die and I’m not going to watch my kids grow up,” Cass tells Andy.

Before Cass gets these tattoos she speaks candidly to The Feed about what this will signify.

7:30pm Thursday SBS 2.
