Vale: Marcia Wallace

Marcia Wallace, best known as the voice of Edna Krabappel on The Simpsons has died, aged 70.

2013-10-27_1926Marcia Wallace, best known as the voice of Edna Krabappel on The Simpsons has died from complications of pneumonia, aged 70.

Wallace, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1985, died at home in Los Angeles on Friday night surrounded by friends and family.

Prior to The Simpsons, she was best known as Bob Newhart’s wisecracking receptionist Carol Kester on the 70s sitcom The Bob Newhart Show. She also guest starred in such series as Full House, Taxi and Murphy Brown.

Simpsons executive producer Al Jean said Saturday that the character of Mrs. Krabappel, who married Ned Flanders in later seasons, will be retired from the show.

“You fall in love with these people when you see them as characters on television, but when met Marcia you loved her even more,” Jean said. “She was sweet, funny, not at all pretentious. She was a breast cancer survivor for over 20 years and she was always chipper and just a wonderful person to be around.”

Before her death Wallace “recorded several lines which will appear in upcoming shows,” Jean said. “But I don’t intend to have anyone else play Mrs. Krabappel. I think Bart will get a new teacher and Ned Flanders will be a widower again.”

The next new episode  in the US will include a tribute to Wallace, who won an Emmy for her role in 1992.

  1. i heard about this whilst watching ABC news 24. sad news, but it shows nobody lasts forever. RIP. Liked Edna Krabappel unfortunely unlucky in love.

  2. They haven’t done a clip show since season 13’s “Gump Roast” (that is, an episode comprised largely of footage from old episodes), but I really hope that they do one to commemorate Marcia Wallace and give Edna the send-off that she deserves. Considering the relatively small amount of new animation that they would need to do for such an episode, they could feasibly have it done within a few months as opposed to the 9 months that it would take for the average episode to be completed.

Still, considering how long ago the dialogue is recorded for all of the episodes, we will probably have another season and a half’s worth of Edna appearances before they finally retire her.

  3. That is very sad. Marcia Wallace was a great comedic actress and of course exemplary voice over artist. Her legacy will be Mrs Krab-apple and the other characters she inhabited. There is no mistaking that voice.

  4. I too had no idea that Ned married Edna. Reast in peace Marcia. I remember her from The Bob Newhart show, and a couple of years back enjoyed her stint on The Young & the Restless.

  5. Wow its been a while since Ive watched the Simpsons obviously. Edna and Flanders married?

So im guessing Bart will get a new 4th grade teacher. Seeing as he never moves grades

  6. It really sucks… I wonder if they’ll cancel the death at the start of season 26 and change it to Krabappel’s death instead (they did say Ned would be a widower again, so they can’t really retire her…
