2013-11-21_1509Long-running UK Drama Foyle’s War is returning for a ninth season.

ITV has ordered three two-hour episodes, written by series creator Anthony Horowitz.

Starring Michael Kitchen and inspired by real events in the early Cold War, the new season will feature Foyle (Kitchen) involved in the murky world of espionage in his role as a Senior Intelligence Officer for MI5.

The show’s eights season saw a slight re-tooling with Foyle, now a senior intelligence officer, focusing his attention on the world of espionage as he gathers secret intelligence in support of Britain’s security, defence and the Government’s foreign and economic policies.

“We are delighted to see the return of Foyle’s War to ITV,” said ITV’s Head of Drama Series Jane Hudson.

“Anthony Horowitz has written three outstanding episodes and the audience are in for a real treat. This series also gives us the chance to take the shoot to one of the jewels of the North West, Liverpool.”

Executive Producer Jill Green added, “Anthony’s masterful storytelling and fascinating untold stories combined with a compelling performance from Michael Kitchen, will guarantee another gripping series.”

Originally cancelled in 2007, the show was given a reprieve and, after a break between 2008-10, was re-tooled by ITV.

Production is slated to commence in January, with a 2015 UK premiere.

  1. I wasn’t aware it was resurrected for the second time earlier this year.

I didn’t enjoy the 2010 series much. Their attempts to broaden the stories and roles for the characters in post war England didn’t really work.

The MI5 setting might have given it some more focus. The show was always at is best dealing with the clash between power and the truth.
