Blackfella films options ‘Edith trilogy’

Blackfella Films plans their first non-Indigenous television drama with Frank Moorhouse's League of Nations trilogy.

2013-12-17_0325Redfern Now producers Blackfella Films plan their first non-Indigenous television drama, having optioned Frank Moorhouse’s grand League of Nations trilogy.

Fairfax reports the period drama, set against the Cold War and the Menzies era, tells the tale of idealistic heroine and civil servant Edith Campbell Berry.

Across three novels, the story begins between the wars with Berrys’ posting at the League of Nations in Grand Days. Dark Palace follows and in the third novel Cold Light the saga ends with her returning to Canberra, married to cross-dressing British diplomat husband Ambrose Westwood.

”I think it is impossible not to fall in love with Edith and [husband] Ambrose,” said Miranda Dear from Blackfella Films, ”and it’s exciting material the way the books sweep through the grand griefs and triumphs of the 20th century from an Australian perspective, and all with wicked humour and piercing intelligence.”

Writers Sue Smith and John Alsop are also attached while Moorhouse will be a consultant.

No network is yet announced.
