US entertainment bible Entertainment Weekly has named Please Like Me in its Top Ten TV shows of 2013, in the end of year print edition hitting US news stands on Friday.
The Josh Thomas comedy, which aired in the US on cable network Pivot, was ranked at #5 in between Orange Is The New Black and Mad Men.
It said, “If HBO’s Girls were recast with Australian twentysomethings…. well it still wouldn’t have as much heart as this ridiculously funny, sad show.”
US critics were full of praise for the series, which this week scored three AACTA nominations.
Series Two is being shot in early 2014 for broadcast on both ABC2 and Pivot. Thomas is currently writing the second season.
Meanwhile, I will be revealing my own top shows for 2013 next week.

Please Like Me certainly deserves the acclaim. And to repeat @DanR, the Moody Christmas series is unbelievably well written, with a great cast and great direction. I look forward to seeing it each week. I only came across it by chance. Such a nice break from all the reality TV we produce here. I am hoping David, your top 2013 shows are based on great content, not just great ratings. That will be an interesting read.
I loved the way Josh and the rest of the cast underplay their roles and manage to bring out such warmth and charm. I don’t think that the ABC had any idea of what a gem of a show they had on their hands. Easily my favourite local show of the year!
Yay, well done Josh Thomas!! That show was such a gem and can’t wait for more next year. It’s def in my top 10 too. 🙂
P.S. ignore that comment abut 2nd series…should have read the article closer!
Agree, this is a very good show. Any word on a 2nd series?
How wonderful, very happy for all involved to get this honour! Really fabulous show.
That’s a great accolade for Josh Thomas’ little show that was hidden away on abc2 here. It is on my top ten list for this year too, so good to see the Americans know quality when they see it.
Well deserved, it’s a wonderful show. More Please Like Me and The Moody’s to look forward to in 2014 – there is a TV God!
