Helix episode 3 on Foxtel Go

New US drama Helix feels like a disaster movie broadened out into a series.

2014-01-17_1808I didn’t get the chance to review new Syfy drama Helix before its premiere this week because it was fast-tracked without preview disks, but I enjoyed the first 2 eps.

The story of a disease outbreak in the Arctic is certainly different to most of what’s on offer (although I sense a bit of Walking Dead in its DNA).

It feels like a disaster movie broadened out into a series. I’m a bit stumped about how it will roll into further seasons, but I guess that’s been addressed by Ron Moore (Battlestar Galactica).

Particularly enjoyed the lounge music while gory scenes were happening on screen.

A third episode is currently available on Foxtel Go ahead of next week’s broadcast and worth checking out.

Helix airs 9:30 Thursdays on FOX8.

  1. I watched the first 2 episodes last night. I like the fact it’s a truly fresh idea, but I’m not sure how it will go as an ongoing series. Hopefully it will open lots of doors so to speak as time goes on. It has a little bit of X-Files about it too, or maybe I’m just hoping it will…

  2. It airs on Fox 8, not Soho 🙂

And yeah, first two episodes were definitely interesting! Keen to see where it goes, I feel like this is going to be one of those slow burn series that rewards faithful viewing in the end because the first two episodes set up a lot but ran pretty slow.

  3. It feels like a C grade move stretched out to eternity.

The exposition was slow and poorly done. Nothing happened and there is little plot. I gave up after 20 minutes and fastforwarded to see if something happened. It didn’t. Less happened in 2 hours than in the first act of an X-Files episode.

And it was cheap. Mostly cheap sets and there were scenes where the actors almost forgot their lines that were not reshot.
