Oops. TEN News “in 256 minutes.”

TEN's news strap during The Bold & The Beautiful doesn't add up.

ten256aTEN may need a new calculator if one of its news straps is anything to go by.

Yesterday during The Bold and The Beautiful in Sydney it flashed up a text indicating that TEN Eyewitness News was about to begin in “256 minutes.”

And that was at 4:57pm.

  1. Another Ten blooper (which I wish I had recorded) was during the 2nd or 3rd Big Bash match – Ten Adelaide broadcast an ad for their 5pm news, with a big bold red message overlay covering basically the whole screen…

“Test Only – Not for Broadcast”

… oops! They must have read it as it broadcast, as it didn’t appear again 🙁

  2. While we are bagging TEN…
In the news sports report, whenever they show golf highlights, they always manage to put a highlights banner near the bottom of the screen which completely hides the putt on the green they are showing. This happens all the time.

Does anybody at ten actually watch what goes to air?!

  3. @The Observer: I can tell you TEN only publish credit listings on their website for locally produced content. With The Bold and the Beautiful, TEN only uploads the edited broadcast version to their website, meaning it is impossible to see the credits, or indeed the scenes they remove. I can also tell you TEN are delivered episodes closed to 22 minutes from the distributor, yet they edit each episode to ensure it runs no longer than 20½ minutes, whether classification necessitates or not. Episode duration is beside each video on Ten’s website. TEN have a lot to learn.

  4. I am suprised some smart a*** hasnt said “slow news day” , ….i love the little things like this you pick up….perfect balance! Good work David

  5. Credits are a handbrake and give the viewer the chance to switch the channel. That is why they squeeze them or speed them up. Plus it is another opportunity for the channel to promote something else. Idle viewers are channel changing viewers.

You will find most shows these days won’t have credits and if you truly are keen on seeing them they are posted on the networks websitte.

  6. @Jason: I completely agree with everything you said, I would love to see that rule being enforced on the networks by the distributors. Using Bold as an example, each closing is unique (i.e different location footage is used), and also the closing is only 25 seconds in length, therefore it doesn’t warrant being removed by TEN in my opinion. The show has an iconic theme tune with a huge following in this country, but TEN don’t care, scissors galore!

  7. @aussie – “removing the closing credits” – actually happens quite a lot. Last year I complained of TEN going straight from Law&Order SVU to the next program. No fade to black even. Thought I was still watching L&O. There used to be clause in suppliers’ contracts that “…under no circumstances shall Licensee delete or reposition the copyright notice or the credits and billings incorporated in the pictures as delivered by …”. Whatever happened to enforcement of that clause? The concept of squeezing, speeding up, and a promo on top just looks ridiculous.

  8. @ stevie g: I agree, the news ticker is way, way too big. It pops up right in the middle of a close-up of someone’s face. I hope Ten are reading this.

  9. It is quite distracing and gets in the way of story lines. When there was the reveal of Hope putting on the “Hope Diamond” for the first time, what do you know, but that damn blue strip gets in the way and obstructs the view. Shame on you ten!

  10. And today on Studio 10 just after 10am we were greeted with “Mums Court Battle Over Child’s Vaccination”. One mum, or more? Where’s apostrophe man when you need him?

  11. Mistakes in the news graphics were a nightly occurrence about a month ago with etc appearing on the screen rather than the persons name or story title. The huge ticker is nothing but annoying. The countdown clock is bearable but unnecessary.

  12. @aussie: Even the ABC is trying new things, trying to act as if they are a commercial network. A few minutes before one of their programs end, we have a box that emerges from the bottom-left of the screen, telling us what is coming up next. And if that isn’t enough, they shrink its closing credits down to the bottom of the screen, with a proper promo on the top half.

I saw one of the Shrek movies on Ten, and the network actually sped up the closing credits while they played a promo for SYTYCDA. The promo felt like it went on forever.

  13. Hopefully, at last, someone broke their toy. We know the news is next. You told us that in a promo 1 min. ago, and in every break in B&B. These gimmicks are overused to the extent that they are ignored when something really important is there.

  14. Classic David!
And that annoying countdown clock TEN positions in the bottom right-hand corner advising when the News is about to start must go! Do they really think the viewer is stupid? Everyone knows the news starts at 5pm. They even run a total of 3 news promos during the ad breaks of The Bold and the Beautiful – get rid of the tickers and countdown clock TEN – it’s overkill.
On a side note, I’m not happy with TEN removing the closing credits to The Bold and the Beautiful either. Doesn’t happen to any of their other internationally acquired content from what I can see.
