Eddie writing Perfect comedy

Exclusive: Writer performer Eddie Perfect is turning his attention to writing a TV comedy.

2014-02-21_0031EXCLUSIVE: TV Network executives may want to start talking with uber-talented Eddie Perfect very soon.

The Offspring star is turning his attention to writing a narrative TV comedy project.

Perfect, who is known for his satirical music compositions, has also penned stage productions including Shane Warne: The Musical and several cabaret shows.

But his latest idea stems from a satire he wrote for the Melbourne Theatre Company last year.

“It’s loosely based on my life. But it’s a real extension of The Beast that I wrote for the Melbourne Theatre Company, which was about the implicit emptiness and banality of middle class life,” he says.

“That sounds like a barrel of laughs, doesn’t it?

“I actually went to write a pitch for it, but every pitch I wrote was so f***ing depressing because my comedy comes from a pretty dark place. The things that I find funny are misery, despair, disconnection and isolation. Can you ever know yourself? Do you really know who your wife is? Why are your friends your friends?

“What is this ridiculous dance of modern life and are any of us happy? Why accumulate stuff and just die?

“That’s what I think is really funny. But it doesn’t look too good on a Press Release.”

“So I’m just writing episodes. I’m up to Episode 3.”

While the project has no home yet, Perfect wants to get it right before he embarks on conversations with TV execs.

“Good comedy can come from anything but the writing itself needs to sing. I want to prove to myself that I can write it and that it’s full of interesting ideas,” he says.

“Nobody is paying me to write it, I’m just doing it on my own time.”

Perfect says his writing is influenced by Louis C.K., Woody Allen and sketch series Portlandia.

“I like to take a seemingly banal, everyday idea and see how far and extreme I can push it.”

  1. Or here’s a better idea. Do what Jim Jefferies did, take it straight to FX (who are looking for quality content to fill their new comedy only off-shoot FXX) and have your work exposed to a far larger and more lucrative market

  2. Louis C.K. and Portlandia? – I’m there. Qubec’s right, don’t waste your time with the two bogan networks and nobody will see it on Ten. Just take it to the ABC if Abbott hasn’t closed it down by the time you’re ready.

  3. Yeah, OK… Because the Australian networks actually invest in comedy or any other genre that isn’t bogan family or crime. Don’t bother Eddie, just go to ABC, they’ll make it.
