A drama based on the life of Molly Meldrum and Countdown is in the pipeline for 2015 at Seven, according to media reports.
Goodness knows there has been plenty of drama in his life…
The Australian reports the Mushroom Pictures project, Molly, is based on the autobiography of Meldrum, ghostwritten by Jeff Jenkins, which has not been released.
Mushroom’s synopsis says the Meldrum project will tell the story of “the music, the bands, the parties, the celebrities, the politics, the girlfriends and boyfriends, the hat and, most of all, the story of Molly himself.”
The Logie Hall of Fame recipient is a household name and made headlines in 2011 when an accident hospitalised him for weeks.
There are also whispers ABC is developing a separate documentary series on Countdown.
Back in 2012 TV Tonight suggested a Countdown drama to capitalise on our love affair with recent nostalgia (INXS proves that point). Still waiting on TEN to greenlight a Number 96 drama. Honest to god, that’s staring them in the face…

Molly was on Sunrise yesterday and he confirmed it’s happening and that Samuel Johnson will be playing him.
Let’s get a mini series about Michael Horrocks and Video Smash Hits, start with the Emily Symons years & then the surely tumultuous transition to Kym Wilson
How long till 9 announce a series on AC/DC and cold chisel. They were very quick to jump on the Kerry packer bandwagon after Paper Giants.
@ Billy C. Samuel Johnson would be an ideal choice to play Molly. I hadn’t thought of it until you mentioned it, but it makes perfect sense.
Trivia: Michael Veitch and Tim Blackburn have also played Molly, Grant Piro was in INXS.
Is this going to be the new trend in Aussie drama… instead of real-life criminals, they’ll be focusing on real-life music industry people?
If so, I’d like to see a drama on AC/DC.
I would prefer a drama on Savage Garden/Darren Hayes.
If they want to film it in the actual Ripponlea studio that Countdown was made in, they better start filming it soon before the ABC demolish it. Sad to see all that TV history being torn down
Samuel Johnson said in a radio interview I heard that Molly had approved him to play him but he wasn’t sure if it would go ahead or if he’d get to play the role.
Great idea as long as they don’t get the actor who played him in the INXS miniseries to portray him.
