James Condon, a pioneering television actor with a long list of Australian credits, has died, aged 90.

He died peacefully at home in Western Australia following a stroke last year.

His credits include Homicide, Number 96, McCloud, Prisoner, Bellamy, A Country Practice, Sons and Daughters, Carson’s Law, Time Trax, Blue Heelers, Kangaroo Palace, Something in the Air, After the Deluge and Neighbours where he appeared twice with his wife Anne Haddy.

Condon and his sister Coralie Condon (considered the “first lady of WA television”) began in repertory theatre in Perth then ABC Radio in 1942. He joined the RAAF Reserve at the age of 18, rising to Flight Lieutenant.

He returned to acting in 1945, later working for the BBC until 1951 before returning to Perth to work for ABC Radio.

When television began in Australia in 1956, he moved to Sydney where he scored a lead role in Portia Faces Life and radio work.

For more than three decades he worked continuously in television, radio, theatre, film and voice-overs.

He married actress Anne Haddy in 1977, acting alongside her twice in Neighbours – as Douglas Blake in 1985 and again in 1995 as Reuben White.
