Where is Behind the Candelabra?

Still no sign of the Liberace telemovie despite Foxtel being the home of HBO in Australia...

2014-02-20_0045Foxtel has taken too long to schedule the Liberace telemovie, Behind the Candelabra, in my view.

While it boasts itself on being the home of HBO, there’s still no sign of this screening anytime soon.

In the US it screened as a telemovie last May, but for the Australian market it had a theatrical release in July.

Foxtel advises it gets the ‘standard movie rights roll out’: On Demand and then Foxtel Movies.

It will finally air on the Masterpiece channel in early June.

  1. @DeeDee: Actually, Liberace himself didn’t like people thinking he was gay. He famously sued a US newspaper for implying he was that way inclined and he won. But then again, that was the 1960s.

  2. Yes @deedee, I was shocked as well when I saw the movie and Liberace was so camp! Here I was all these years thinking he was a macho Bruce Springsteen type of guy. 😉
Very strange that this hasn’t been on Aus TV ages ago to cash in on all the buzz – it had a pretty short run at the cinema so I don’t understand why it’s taken so long to come to the small screen. I’d imagine most of the people who would be interested in it would have seen it by now by other means because of the delay.

  3. Foxtel’s movie selection – both “movie channels”, box office (5 new movies in 3 weeks), catch up etc – is leaving a great deal to be desired.
Perhaps David you can do a piece on Foxtel’s downward spiral in their performance in this area.

  4. I guess it was always going to take longer to make it to TV in Australia because it had a theatrical release. Name another movie that has had a theatrical release and then made it onto the box within a year?? Not many I think.

  5. Rights would be held by whoever distributed theatrically most likely. Deals HBO already had in place would have largely been excluded unless specially dealt with.
