Joan Rivers returns to The Tonight Show after 25 years

Video: Banned by Johnny Carson, but welcomed by Jimmy Fallon, Joan Rivers is back with bite.

Warning: She’s still got it.

After a 25 year absence*, caustic comedian Joan Rivers has returned to The Tonight Show.

Rivers, 80, had gotten her first big break as Johnny Carson’s permanent guest host in 1983 but left just a few years later to launch her own competing program, FOX’s The Late Show With Joan Rivers -a move that Carson would never accept.

And by the look of her jokes she is nearly on the verge of a network ban for adult language.

Go Ms. Rivers!

* excludes brief appearance in Fallon’s first show.

  1. @Gaz she established a show on Fox in the exact same timeslot of her friend Carsons show and she never pre-warned him. That’s why he never spoke to her again.

  2. You are right David. I apologise for my very poor choice of words and I hope you will forgive me. However I stand behind my comments that Fallon is disrespecting Carsons legacy. I know that there was Jack Paar and Steve Allen however this was ‘his’ baby and he built it into the show it is today. I find it disgusting that she was allowed back on the show. However note I never liked her or found her that talented.

  3. @ Josh, Show business is just that, a business. People get their start somewhere, and then they move on to greener pastures. Surely Joan Rivers wasn’t expected to perform in Carsons shadow for the rest of her career. Frankly, I think Carson was quite selfish and petulant for not respecting Joan’s desire to break out on her own.

  4. You are an absolute idiot Fallon and Knox disrespecting Carson. She got booted because Carson helped her career by letting her guest host his show a lot, then she repaid the favour by creating her own show in the same timeslot. Pathetic and untalented. Wanker

    1. Josh I have no problem with you disagreeing with content here but resorting to insults is frankly against Comments Policy. If you have a problem with the factual elements (and frankly I don’t see how they dispute yours) then you should take it up with the Hollywood Reporter, as per the link. If you have a problem with me or others enjoying Ms. Rivers then too bad. It’s a free world. And there was no disrepecting Carson, he’s a TV legend. Kindly follow Comments Policy for future comments or they will not be published.
