No Deal says Andrew O’Keefe

Andrew O’Keefe confirms Seven has no plans to start filming new episodes of Deal or No Deal.

aokdAndrew O’Keefe has confirmed what we’ve known for some time: Seven has no plans to start filming new episodes of Deal or No Deal in the near future.

“We’re doing everything we can to bolster the lead in to Million Dollar Minute, which of course is now the lynchpin into the news, and when you have a job like that on your hands you have to really focus your energy on it, so we’re not even thinking about Deal at the moment,” he told Mumbrella.

Of course Seven Programmer Angus Ross told TV Tonight in January the network had no plans to film new episodes.

“We obviously have an option to go back and shoot more episodes if we want but at the moment we will stick with the repeats,” he said.

O’Keefe said he is proud of Deal or No Deal and what Seven did to reinvigorate the show, but admitted it had fatigued.

That said, there’s nothing shabby about 10 years of the game show at all.

“The simple fact of the matter is that it’s a guessing game, and we had people playing the same guessing game for ten years. We still enjoyed it, we had a ball. But it’s tough to ask a wide audience to keep watching something which they know what they’re going to get for ten years.

“From a network point of view it’s not just about that one show, it’s about the whole network identity, and if you want to stay fresh in people’s eyes you have to look at every part of the schedule and I guess Deal was the least fresh of all.

“Now that Hot Seat is the long-term incumbent in the zone, that may start to suffer some of the fatigue Deal has,” he added.

  1. I hope if they ever decide to refresh Hot Seat, they should change it back to a single player, 3 lifeline, 15 question format, refresh the graphics, but keeping the clock and minimise chatter for a good paced show.

Basically, like the old US syndicated version:

  2. It had a good run but I think it’s time to retire it – or completely reinvigorate it – altogether. And as I’ve said many times before, if they did an Aussie version of The Cube, I’d watch every episode! That should be cheap and addictive enough to pull the punters.

  3. I disagree with Okeefe’s last point. Hot Seat is easier to keep fresh as there are always new events happening which could be turned into questions.
