Brisbane journalist Doug Murray, best known for long running Brisbane Extra, has died aged 63.
Murray, known as “the man in the hat” on Nine’s former local current affairs show passed away from cancer.
He joined Brisbane Extra in 1992, and remained with it until it was axed, as Extra, in 2009. Prior to Extra he was Murray was an ABC TV news weather forecaster in the 1980s, and one of the original presenters on Landline until 1991.
Managing director of Nine Queensland Kylie Blucher told Fairfax, “Doug’s unique ability to share a yarn, coupled with his trademark hat saw him became a viewer favourite.
“Over the years viewers came to know what made a ‘Dougie’ story and would regularly phone the station saying, ‘This one’s for Dougie!’”
“This is very sad news for everyone at Channel Nine Queensland who were privileged to work with Doug.”
Former Extra reporter Margueritte Rossi remembered his “individuality, sense of style, ability to entertain and tell a bloody good yarn…”

I remember meeting Doug a long while back when I was living in Brisbane. A sad loss
Thanks for clearing this up. Yesterday I was receiving messages on Facebook and Twitter saying that Doug Mulray had died. I couldn’t find anything on Google about Uncle Doug dying.
