A Current Affair raises $1.1m for brothers in need

Viewers open up their hearts and wallets to 3 boys in need, after being moved by their story on ACA.

acalwViewers of A Current Affair have donated more than $1.1 million for three boys who were left orphaned when their mother died last month.

The Lawrence boys featured on ACA on Monday and Tuesday night. Jarrod, Blake and Dylan Lawrence, who lost their father some years ago, were facing funeral costs, house repayments and foster care. Dylan has also been recovering from treatment for a brain tumour.

But viewers and businesses have responded to their plight with amazing generosity. As the show went to air last night the tally of a two day appeal was above $1.1m.

ACA Executive Producer Grant Williams said, ““This is the only show on Australian television that can step in and genuinely change someone’s life forever.

“To see the boys go into the bank this morning to find a million dollars sitting in the account was simply breathtaking.

“This was only possible with the phenomenal generosity of A Current Affair’s viewers right around Australia and we thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts.

“Rest assured these Lawrence brothers deserve every cent and will do us all proud.”

A trustee has been appointed to take care of the funds on the boys’ behalf.

  1. @deedeedragons: It seems this story ticked all the right boxes needed for a current affairs show. Look at the way ACA did the Paxtons dole bludging story in the 90’s….these shows can make or break people depending on how they are ‘marketed’ to the emotions.

It is nice for ACA to do a positive story for a change but still has a huge imbalance dealing with the insecurities of the viewing public in the form of ‘chasing the bad guy’

  2. Yeah, that’s nice and all, but it’s a bit of a slap in the face to the literally tens of thousands of people in similar or worse positions. Do they get to keep the money left after they’ve paid the house off and paid for a guardian until the eldest turns 18?

ACA/Nine, if you really want to help, start up Appealathon again and give the money raised to organisations who will ensure that it gets to those most in need.

  3. It is wonderful that these guys can stay together and be financially secure. It’s just a pity that hundreds of other people in the same situation have to battle on without any assistance.
