Eurovision 2014: The Big 5 plus 1

Video: A French Bob Downe, Italy's Lady Gaga and a little Euro-Bruno Mars -here comes Copenhagen 2014.

2014-04-20_2213_001Not long to go now until Copenhagen 2014, when the 59th Eurovision Song Contest takes place at the former shipworks turned arena, B&W Hallerna.

This year Australia makes a guest appearance with Jessica Mauboy as a guest performer at the Second Semi Final (Saturday May 10 on SBS ONE), a generous acknowledgement of our years of devotion to this most colourful of events.

Of the 37 countries appearing, six have automatically graduated to the Grand Final: United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, France as key funders of the European Broadcasting Union, plus the host nation Denmark.

As you can see by their entries, there’s a bit of everything here. A French Bob Downe (he’s not actually in the act itself), Italy’s version of Lady Gaga and maybe a little Euro-Bruno Mars?

Of these 5 entries, Denmark is the preferred choice of the bookmakers.

GERMANY:
Elaiza
“Is it right”

UNITED KINGDOM:
Molly
“Children of the Universe”

FRANCE:
TWIN TWIN
“Moustache”

SPAIN:
Ruth Lorenzo
“Dancing in the Rain”

ITALY:
Emma
“La Mia Città”

DENMARK:
Basim
“Cliche Love Song”

Eurovision grand final airs on SBS on Sunday May 11.

  1. Bob la Downe is hosting a game show as well, just like I have said that our Bob Downe should (preferably Blankety Blanks).

I also enjoy Eurovision, a bit of colourful escapist fun from the day to day one comes across each day.

  2. Thank you for the clips, David. Love the Eurovision Song contest. UK might actually stand a chance this year. Apart from stupid France, all sound pretty good.

  3. Got the official Eurovision album last week. There are some really great songs this year. I do love the Danish entry, but my heart always belongs to Sweden (despite the piece of dodgy grammar in the chorus). The Latvian entry is a corker too. The hipsters will love it!
