Remy Hii has won the Graham Kennedy Award For Most Outstanding Newcomer -with a trip to LA as his prize.

2013-07-22_2316Actor Remy Hii has been announced as the recipient of the Graham Kennedy Award For Most Outstanding Newcomer at this year’s TV WEEK Logie Awards.

Hii, who portrayed Van Nguyen in the SBS telemovie Better Man, won the award from a shortlist that included Anna Bamford (Wonderland, Network Ten), Caren Pistorius (Paper Giants: Magazine Wars, ABC1), Meyne Wyatt (Redfern Now, ABC1) and Shareena Clanton (Wentworth, Foxtel/SoHo).

“I’m so excited to be named the winner of the Graham Kennedy award this year!” he said. “Playing Van Tuong Nguyen in SBS’s Better Man was an incredible journey for me and it’s a huge honour to receive this recognition.

“I’m hugely grateful and excited for what this will mean for me in the future.”

Hii, who also appeared in Neighbours last year, wins the first prize attached to the award: a trip to Hollywood through LA-based industry organisation Australians in Film and Virgin Australia, a one-year scholarship at Stella Adler Academy Of Acting And Theatre in LA, and mentoring with prominent industry contacts.

“We’re thrilled that Remy has won,” Emma Nolan, TV WEEK Editor, said.

“Having followed and supported his burgeoning career in TV WEEK, it become very clear that he has a big future in this industry.

“We’re honoured to be able to present him with a TV WEEK Logie Award and an acting scholarship. We wish him all the best.”

“Australians in Film congratulates Remy on this well-deserved honour,” Tracey Vieira, President Australians in Film Los Angeles, said. “We have been watching his success from Los Angeles and look forward to helping him continue to establish a successful international career.”

Malaysian-born Hii studied at the Queensland University Of Technology and the National Institute Of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and has played in a number of stage, short films, and guest TV roles prior to Better Man. He was also nominated as Best Lead Actor In A Television Drama at the AACTA Awards.

He also has a role in Marco Polo for Netflix, currently filming in Italy, Kazakhstan and Malaysia.

This year the Logie Awards announced the Graham Kennedy Award ahead of the ceremony, instead of the Hall of Fame award, which will be revealed on Sunday.

  1. So any of the other four (three of them) who aren’t up for other awards probably won’t get interviewed on the red carpet. “Congrats on your nomination! Good luck tonight… Oh wait, you already lost.”

  2. @Tracey B agree with you!
@ bettestreep2008 god, I hope Ruffo isn’t popular new talent choice…he cannot act, which in my opinion makes him unattractive.

  3. Excellent choice.

Sadly the popular new talent will probably go to Johnny Ruffo.

No contest which of the two is the better actor.
Remy was outstanding in Better Man and has a very promising career.

I believe he has been cast in a US drama already.

  4. great to hear that Remy won this award. He was great in Better Man. Very deserving.

I wonder if they’ll still show this award on the night of the Logies.
