Dreadful wait for Penny Dreadful

New horror series will not be fast-tracked to Australia by Showtime.

PND-epi101-104_0480iFans waiting to see US / UK horror series Penny Dreadful may be in for a dreadful wait.

The series, which fuses 19th century British fiction, from The Picture of Dorian Gray, Dracula, and Frankenstein, premiered in the US earlier this week.

But the Showtime series shows no signs of being fast-tracked by Foxtel.

Earlier this year Foxtel Director of Television Brian Walsh told TV Tonight the series was “highly erotic and very bloody!”

“I think Penny Dreadful is really exciting. It’s produced by CBS for Showtime in the UK. It’s all shot in London and some of the legendary characters who appear will give this concept great potential to run as an ongoing series. It’s a fresh piece of drama and the quality of the trailer and rushes I’ve seen look terrific. It’s beautifully shot, with strong performances and it will be for Showcase.”

Yesterday a Foxtel spokesperson said the show would not be Express but would air in 2014.

  1. Showtime content is treated so appallingly in Australia. Nurse Jackie, Californication, Episodes, The Big C, Penny Dreadful …. it’s a brand as credible as HBO but you’d never know it here.

  2. This show is terrific. Think “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” meets “Ripper Street”. Great cast (Billie Piper as a prostitute, Eva Green is dazzling, her seance scene will knock your socks off. Written by John Logan (“Skyfall”). Sam Mendes EP. Classy + gory + creepy + campy Victoriana.

  3. It’s sexy! It’s bloody! It’s got stars and high production values! It’s popular OS! We’ll show it here one day. When we have the time you understand. When we feel like it.

It’s not like we have to worry about the competition or anything.

  4. Pity. But if it turns out to be very good, they can always change their mind. They didn’t fast track Game of Thrones in the first season either.
