Michael C. Hall: ‘Sometimes I wish Dexter had died.’

Michael C. Hall says what we were all thinking about that Dexter finale.

DEXTER-Those kindMichael C. Hall has again been asked about the ending of Dexter.

“Liked it? I don’t think I even watched it,” Hall tells the Daily Beast.

“I thought it was narratively satisfying — but it was not so savoury.

“I think the show had lost a certain amount of torque,” he added.

“Just inherently because of how long we’d done it, because of the storytelling capital we’d spent, because our writers may have been gassed… Maybe some people wanted a more satisfying-maybe they wanted a happy ending for him, either a happy ending or a more definitive sense of closure.”

He also discussed it with IGN saying, “Sometimes I wish he’d offed himself, wish he’d died, wish Deb had shot him in that train compartment — of course, that would have made an eighth season difficult to do.”

And a sequel. However he recently said a return for a sequel was unlikely, with “no immediate plans” to reprise the role.

Hall will next appear in in the role of another murderous suburban dad in the independent thriller, Cold in July, but reckons the role is poles apart from his last.

“This guy felt closer to me than Dexter, inasmuch as I would be horrified if I actually shot and killed somebody. I wouldn’t kill somebody then go eat a sandwich after I dismembered them.”

  1. @kylie – I know, how could he not watch his own show?! I’m glad that he admitted – in a roundabout way, it wasn’t a great ending. For me, the ending was worse than Lost & that’s saying a lot!

@dayman yes, the finale made no sense at all. I read the studio would not let Dexter be killed to leave the door open for a movie. The original show runner gave a great interview where he outlined his vision for the finale, I wish he’d been there to carry it out! I don’t have the link but it’s worth Googling it. I wanted to see the Miami PD discover Dexter’s ‘hobby’ as they seemed to be the only people left in Miami who didn’t know about it. It would have exciting to see their reactions & Dexter on the run. I’m still angry Deb died, she didn’t deserve that & it was unnecessary.

  2. Dexter should have just shown up and met Hannah. The whole show and especially the last season built to this.

He realised he wasn’t the monster he was made to believe he was. He got over his urge to kill, he could move on. It was all set up.

I think at the last minute the writers for whatever reason decided they couldn’t have a happy ending for him as a killer, or some one in power made this decision and so they did that dumb stupid ending.

It doesn’t make sense, he’s a danger to those around him? But he’s no longer a killer and starting a fresh new life. So theoretically it’s all behind him and won’t catch up. He decides he’s too dangerous, but then just abandons his son with his girlfriend who is also a killer.
