Sam Armytage: I’m a pretty open book… but a lot of what they write is rubbish

EXCLUSIVE: Since Samantha Armytage stepped into the co-hosting role of Sunrise she’s had her fair share of media coverage.

Much of it has been positive (including shoring up the show’s ratings), but there have been one or two ‘surprising’ stories too.

Media were in a spin when she supposedly revealed her phone number and was bombarded with requests for dates and marriage proposals. She hit back over an article suggesting David Koch treated her like eye candy during a light-hearted segment with pole dancing. And there was talk about her love life after a lunch with Modern Family‘s Eric Stonestreet.

Yes in breakfast TV everything you do, on or off the screen, is the subject of reportage and gossip. At its best, it probably means you have arrived.

“Sometimes it puzzles me how certain things turn up as stories,” Armytage told TV Tonight.

“But it’s a 24 hour media isn’t it? They’ve got to come up with stuff all the time.

“My life has become ‘turned over’ shall we say… interesting…”

In such circumstances, does she prefer to comment or stay politely silent?

“It depends what it is. With the job I do I’m a pretty open book. There’s a lot of stuff I share. But in my private life you don’t want to share everything,” she says.

“So if it’s worth commenting on, I’ll comment on it. But I have an up and down relationship (with media) where sometimes it’s welcome and sometimes it’s not.

“A lot of it is rubbish, but there are so many pages to fill on the internet these days, if they don’t write rubbish, what else are they going to write about? But you know… that’s the beast that it is!

“We put ourselves out there and sometimes we get shot down.”
