Union blames TEN management for failed strategy

MEAA says job cuts represent repeated failures by TEN’s board & senior executives "whose jobs appear safe."

tenpyThe Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance has blamed the TEN Board and Management for a failed strategy which will result in around 150 job losses.

“MEAA condemns this latest round of redundancies that further erode the broadcast and editorial functions at TEN and will represent a massive increase in work intensification for the staff that remain,” it said in a statement to its members.

“Since 2012, TEN has shed about 40 per cent (some 250 employees) of its broadcast and journalist staff. These cuts represent repeated failures in strategy by TEN’s board of directors and senior executives whose jobs appear safe.”

TEN Network management has confirmed the announced program closures and the anticipated cut of 150 positions in total, including current vacant positions which will not be filled.

A voluntary redundancy round will be opened today for a period of two weeks, closing on June 4th.

It is expected further details of the number of positions to be cut in each state will be released by management today.

Meetings of MEAA members will be held this week to discuss job losses.

Yesterday CEO Hamish McLennan wrote to employees saying, “It is a tough period for Ten and we need to take some painful, but necessary, measures to restructure the business.

“It is very disappointing that these programs have not been more successful, but I would like to thank everyone involved with them for their focus, dedication and hard work.

“We need to use our News resources – staff and content – more effectively, while continuing to provide high-quality local News services.”

  1. Natasha Exelby apparently left Channel Ten on April 2nd, according to her twitter account. Does anyone know what’s happening to the rest of the morning presenters?

  2. When will we see a top-down approach to these failures. It wasn’t these 150 staff members fault that things didn’t work. It was repeated failures by Ten Management and Board, all of which not only escaped with their jobs, but also with their overvalued salaries in check. They should’ve started cutting costs from the top and working down that way. And if the suits don’t like it, they can join the ever growing Ten scrapheap, and let some fresh blood revtalise the network, instead of stealing the dregs from other networks.

  3. @scoba
I do hope we see them with TEN still. It’s best to keep your top talent otherwise they’ll be snapped up pretty quickly elsewhere.

  4. I’d like to know the fate of Matt Doran, Hermoine Kitson , Natasha Exelby and Natarsha Belling.
Natarsha and Matt presenting the weekend news was ten times superior to that of Mike Munro.
