Airdate: Who We Are: Brave New Clan

BIO's Indigenous doco profiles 6 young Australians including James Saunders, Miranda Tapsell & Kaylah Tyson.

2014-06-06_0110Foxtel returns its Indigenous series Who We Are next month, profiling six exceptional young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

This is the third instalment of the Who We Are series developed in partnership with Reconciliation Australia and CAAMA Productions (Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association). Who We Are: Brave New Clan is directed by Leah Purcell.

The young Australians featured are:

· James Saunders: Rugby player, with a digital PR business, 28 years old, from Brisbane, currently living in Sydney.
· Miranda Tapsell: Actress, 27 years old, from Darwin, currently living in Sydney (pictured).
· Kaylah Tyson: Rapper, 26 years old, from Brisbane.
· Joshua Toomey: Electrical linesman, 28 years old, from Dubbo, and currently living in Lakehaven, Central Coast NSW.
· Kim Isaacs: Doctor, 34 years old, from Broome.
· Harry Sabatino: Engineering student, 19 years old, from Saibai Island in the Torres Strait, and currently living in Brisbane.

Leah Purcell said, “We’re proud of the documentary we’ve created – it promotes understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, histories and cultures, while dispelling some commonly held stereotypes. Who We Are: Brave New Clan celebrates diversity across Australia and we hope it inspires audiences to find out more about Indigenous place names, people, languages and cultures in their own local area.”

“The six young people featured in the program helped us find the title “Brave New Clan”. James, Miranda, Kaylah, Josh, Kim and Harry are all incredibly “brave” having faced adversity at some stage in their lives to now be happier individuals, role models for others, and leaders in their communities. They are “new” talent, all up and comers in their chosen fields, and of course, they form an integral part of their own “clan” and communities.”

Brian Walsh, Foxtel Executive Director of Television said, “Who We Are: Brave New Clan reinforces Foxtel’s commitment to sharing stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, their excellence and success – and adds to our continuing commitment to producing Australian content. We are proud of our partnerships with Reconciliation Australia and CAAMA, and the Who We Are series is a key element of Foxtel’s Reconciliation Action Plan.”
