David Campbell says Georgie Gardner’s farewell was “sickening”, but…

These comments would be a bit rough coming from the Mornings co-host.

ggardDavid Campbell reckons Georgie Gardner’s farewell on Today was “sickening” which would be a bit rough coming from the Mornings co-host.

Problem is, it’s another David Campbell, who writes for the Daily Telegraph.

“I was sitting and eating my Rice Bubbles this morning when I was hit by a surging wave of physical illness,” he wrote.

“No, it wasn’t last night’s curry chicken coming back to bite me, it was the Today Show’s farewell to Georgie Gardner.

“The whole process was — in a word — sickening.

“Montages. Well wishes from staff, fellow presenters, former presenters and fans. Even a personal message from Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

“‘Holy crap,’ I thought. Is Georgie dying? Is she being forced into retirement due to some chronic illness?”

The author is David Campbell, homepage editor for Daily Telegraph, not to be confused with David Campbell of Mornings.

Phew!

Someone let Karl know before he lets rip.

  1. It was ridiculous. She didn’t find a cure for cancer nor broker world peace. Some perspective …..she read an autocue for a few minutes , repeating the same thing over 4 hours.

  2. Tony Bee – I think the tribute to Charlie was justified – yes it too was quite detail. But not to the same level. And he had been there as the anchor from day one. A really significant achiever. I think a lot of people find the Georgie farewell over the top because she wasn’t the anchor, so probably not as significant, and it felt a lot more overblown because it got a lot of media coverage. Well, to quote Kent Brockman “Those are my two cents!”

  3. It would have been a bit awkward on Mornings if it was the same David as Georgie is going to fill in for Sonia when she is away with Big Brother.

I remember Today doing this for everyone when they left Today. They really are a tight bunch & it does show, unlike Sunrise where Kochie is always in charge & the star.

  4. Remember Charlie’s farewell from The Project? It seems to be a “sickening” trend. These people didn’t find the cure for cancer … they simply host tv shows.

  5. I actually just went back to the news.com.au website to look at this article again and I think they are deliberately trying to confuse the two David Campbells with this headline…
“TEARS, streamers, a message from the PM and a whole program of the Today Show dedicated to Georgie Gardner’s farewell was — in a word — sickening, writes David Campbell.”
I’m assuming most people would have no idea there is a 2nd David Campbell so this is misleading and bad form from the Telegraph.

  6. I’m glad I read your article David. I read this story on another site and was wondering why David Campbell (Mornings Co-host) would come out and say that.
I think on this story the Daily Telegraph should let readers know the author and the TV host are 2 different people. If I hadn’t read you story here David, I’d be none the wiser and wondering why the TV host is making a comment like this about his own network.

  7. Well he writes for the Telegraph, say no more. I thought it was very moving and sweet. It was no more over the top than other shows have done when someone has left the show.

  8. I thought it was a bit much too. She was only the news reader, and it’s not as though she was retiring. Nine do tend to go over the top with these type of things. Yet they didn’t give Kerri-Anne the send off she deserved.

  9. It was much the same when Mel left Sunrise……Though there’s a bit more excuse there as she had been on the show longer and had the main role.
