Matt Lauer sticks with NBC Today

Where in the world is Matt? He's still on NBC.

2014-06-14_0143Matt Lauer has renewed his contract with NBC Today for ‘multiple’ according to US reports.

Lauer’s current deal was to end in the next few months but while full details of his renewal have not been disclosed, the NY Times reports an extension for more than two years, tipped at $20 million to $25 million a year.

Lauer has been anchor on the show since 1997 after previously being news presenter from 1994.

“I consider this the best job in broadcasting,” Lauer said in his own statement. “I love people I work with every day and I have such respect and gratitude for the people I work for. I couldn’t be happier to be staying.”

In the US, Good Morning America leads against Today. In April 2012 GMA toppled what had been the longest winning streak in US history, at 16 years for Today. Much of the latter’s drop was attributed to the exit of Ann Curry.

Deborah Turness, the president of NBC News, said in a statement, “We couldn’t be more thrilled with Matt’s decision. As I’ve said many times before, he’s the best in the business, and there is nobody I would rather have in the Today anchor chair than Matt.”

In Australia NBC Today airs at 4am Tuesday  – Saturday on Seven.

  1. You usually multiply by 10 everything in US because of population…so that’s worth about 2 – 2.5 million for an Aussie anchor.
I just hope he gives away 20 per cent to some charitable foundations. It is a shocking amount of money to earn , despite the early starts !

It was scheduled for this morning……….
Yes it was….not watching that early….but here in Sydney we get an hour early on Seven…and then 2 hours on 7Mate 9 to 11AM….Monday it is just 1 hour 9 to 10AM…no weekend now…use to be Sat on 7Mate…dont know why they stopped it?!?.
I have watched GMA on Nine and also CBS this morning on TEN…but prefer Today…although I have to say…it use to be better….for me.

  3. “I consider this the best job in broadcasting”.
It must be really difficult to say that when you’re paid so little for your time.

  4. The longest winning streak in US TV would have to be The Young & The Restless which has been the No 1 daytime soap for 25 years continuously.
