Nine to appeal planning decision on Willoughby site

Nine is appealing a planning decision on its Willoughby redevelopment, but locals remain unhappy.

2013-03-30_0148Channel Nine is appealing a planning decision to reduce the $200m redevelopment of its Willoughby site from 450 to 350 high rise apartments.

Nine is headed to the NSW Land and Environment Court today after the Planning Assessment Commission in March determined the site should hold no more than 350 apartments at a height no greater than eight storeys.

The original plan was for around 600 apartments but it had been scaled back after community consultation.

But local residents are still criticising the network, following a long-running disagreement over the future use of the land.

Willoughby Area Action Group spokesman Peter Wilton told News Corp, Nine was “still the one not listening to the issues identified by the Willoughby community and the Planning Assessment Commission.”

“We call on the NSW Government to ensure PAC’s continued independence by rigorously defending PAC’s determination,” he said.

Willoughby Council will also seek to participate in the appeal process.

Mayor Cr Giles-Gidney said, “Both Willoughby Council and the community understand that development will happen on the site, however we need to ensure that it is the right development.”

When the network moves, it is expected to look at areas around the Australian Technology Park at Redfern or in Pyrmont.

  1. Darling Harbour is undergoing a substantial face lift. Wouldn’t be surprised if they move in there. Peter Overton wouldn’t need the green screen behind him, he could us a real window.

  2. Pyrmont would be the best, as it’s in the CBD, which means faster access to big stories, as well as the ease of getting special guests and celebrities in – similar to Seven with Martin Place.
