Bindi Irwin unhappy with Studio 10 interview

Bindi Irwin is right when she says an interview describing Steve Irwin's death should never have aired.

2014-03-10_1656I’m not surprised to hear that Bindi Irwin, 16, has spoken out against comments made by cameraman Justin Lyons, who told Studio 10 about filming Steve Irwin’s death.

Lyons was promoting his new documentary E-Motion when he spoke to the TEN programme in March.

He described in detail the incident with a stingray in 2006, which killed the wildlife warrior.

But it’s now clear that the family had never consented to the interview being broadcast.

While Lyons paid tribute to his former business partner, it’s important to remember there are still 2 minors missing their father.

“It’s really hurtful,” Bindi Irwin, 16, has now told Who magazine.

“For as long as I live, I’ll never listen to it. It’s wrong as a family for us to hear about it.”

Footage of the Studio 10 interview is still available on YouTube.

  1. @ms k – I think teens tend to mock a lot if things, it’s a cynical topsy turvy time! I work with kids from ages 3-14 and young children seem to relate to her and like her, I certainly didn’t mean to imply that teenagers would. I hope she is happy as well, she seems to be at the moment. I still don’t understand the problem with having his images around, at least it’s something to look back at fondly, I think because they won’t see him in the flesh again it is nice they have all that footage to look at. I don’t know anything about Terri’s parenting, I don’t read any magazines or gossip or know her personally obviously so I don’t have any opinion about it. All I can say is she was thrown into a tough situation and I’m sure she’s doing the best she can.

  2. Ha ha ha.
Lyn, you’re my favourite type of Forum commenter. “I didn’t see it but….”

I thought he spoke very eloquently and thoughtfully about the incident. It’s his story to tell, he was there when it happened. It’s a pitty he didn’t think to get permission, but really, he didn’t need it.

  3. @kristie Yes Bindi comes across as a very mature teenager and seems very confident in interviews.I have teenagers and I know that most of them are not interested in what she says and if anything she is mocked. My main concern for her is being constantly reminded of her father.Imagine having live images around you constantly, knowing that he will never be back to see you.She was 8 when Steve died and has been put in front of the media so many times for the wrong reasons. All I hope for her is to have a happy life and be herself, not what her mother molded.

  4. @ms k – I think it’s pretty normal to feel that you will see a deceased loved one again, I sometimes feel like that myself about family who have passed. I don’t know, maybe it was comforting for the kids to watch videos of Steve? When he died I remember feeling glad for the kids that there is so much footage of him (and with his family) doing what he loved so that they can remember how terrific he was. Bindi appears to be a great kid, she seems kind and confident and I think she’s a very good role model. I don’t know really know much about Terri but I guess it’s hard to know how anyone would react to such a sudden loss.

  5. I was reading today that Bindi still feels her dad will walk through the door one day….reading that makes sense with the way she has been bought up by her over the top mother.I also remember that for years, the mother would play videos of Steve for the kids to watch while they had their breakfast! On a psychological scale…that would be an act of pure selfishness and extremely hard for the kids to deal with, maybe not straight away, but a haunting feeling for the rest of their life.Bindi will have some hiccups as life goes on living in a make believe world that her mother continues to encourage. Once she is 18,I hope she travels and see the world away from the freak show.

  6. I agree with Andrew, the irwins use steves name to sell the park, so you cant pick and choose. I thought the comments made about Steve were very respectful and very moving. if Steve is a no go subject , remove his image from the park guys.

    1. Given there were minors involved, they only needed to get the family’s blessing. Nobody has said Steve is a no-go zone. Interesting that some people think continuing Irwin’s work is somehow exploitative.

  7. I know Justin Lyons and he is one of the finest people you will ever meet. I also watched the Studio 10 interview and it could not have been more respectful to Steve’s memory. He could have sold his story for money but he didn’t, he gave it away for free on a daytime show to help promote his doco and what he said absolutely related to the very positive message that he is trying to impart with his movie. So I am disappointed that the Irwin family has a problem with talking about Steve since they do it all the time and still use him to sell their park. You can’t have it both ways

  8. I didn’t see it.
    But, I think it’s distasteful.
If he was such a good friend, you’d think he’d have a little more compassion for the family
    and not tell anyone!

  9. I’m not too sure why it has taken Bindi so long to speak out about the interview? Maybe $$$.
But I’m sure the Irwin’s knew somebody was going to speak out about Steve’s death eventually.

I actually found the interview quite insightful into the moments surrounding Steve’s death and appreciate somebody telling us about it.
